I've tried all the different streaming boxes, and AppleTV is easily the best. Not because it is incredibly technically sophisticated, but because the interface is very simple and streamlined. It doesn't try to sell you stuff constantly, it respects the fact that it is in your living room or bedroom, and like a lot of Apple stuff it just works. Apple is really good at this sort of technology as appliance stuff.

Now, this is not the version to buy for your fancy home theater. It is a stripped down version that doesn't do 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos. Apple isn't paying Dolby the license fees for all that, and it has a maximum resolution of just 1080p. That is why it is a lot cheaper than the full-featured 4K version.

Today, the amount of streaming content available in 4K remains pretty limited, and for a smaller TV in the bedroom you wouldn't notice the difference anyway.

I have the 4k version for our main TV, and this one works just as well, same interface, same snappy performance, etc. it just doesn't have the ability to handle higher resolution streams.

So this slightly de-rated version is for somebody who has an older 1080p TV, a secondary TV, a smaller TV and doesn't really need the full performance of the 4K version.

Yes, you can buy a cheaper streaming box or stick, but this is the cheapest to get the premium Apple interface.
