Step towards digital minimalism

If you're looking at the flip iv, you're probably looking for a basic phone with a few essential feature. I purposefully sought out this phone to reduce the amount of time I spend on a smartphone. In addition, I wanted a smaller phone to keep in my pocket, as opposed to the large smartphones of today. I transferred my att sim from my smartphone to the flip iv. It works with att 4G. Phone calls and messages were transferred seamlessly. Note that I did have my sim replaced by att a few months ago because the previous sim was outdated and dropped calls occasionally.
I still use my smartphone connected via wifi for the many helpful apps when I am home, but I am enjoying the decision to simplify my life when heading out.
A few notes after a week of usage.
1. Battery life is not great when wifi and bluetooth are on. I generally turn these features off, except when needed.
2. I use gmail, but get too many emails to manage effectively with the flip phone. Thus, I created an email address for emergencies. I could not get google gmail to verify, but I had other domains I could use that offered a simple email SMTP/IMAP setup.
3. Camera is okay. I'm not expecting much, but at least it does take pictures.
4. Bluetooth works with wireless ear buds, so I can listen to downloaded flash card songs and podcasts.
5. Some reviewers discounted this phone for its data entry. I attribute part of this to user error. There are four modes for data entry - you can toggle them using the # key. It toggles through predictive, abc, ABC, Abc, 123. There are multiple screen options for symbols, which are accessed through the * key and clicking right or left (next to the okay button). In addition, many screens allow for google automatic transcription, which works fairly well and is a great time saver.
6. Importing contacts. I am still researching the best way to do this. Att probably can do this automatically, if you don't want to bother with kaios apps.
7. Swapping sims with a smartphone. I wouldn't recommend doing this regularly if you wish to switch between smartphone and flip phone daily, as the back plastic is fairly stiff and a little clumsy to remove and replace.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with this phone. For less than $90, it's a great buy, even if you only intend to experiment with digital minimalist. Take it with you on your next backpacking trip. Enjoy nature and forget trying to capture every last photo with >12MP resolution.
UPDATE: docking down to 4 stars, since Google assistant is no longer supported in kaios. This means voice dictation of text messages is no longer available. I wish kaios would offer some alternative. Google assistant really helps data entry.

for a simplicity in the tech world this is an excellent product. Kaios software has come a long way ..... well adapted
Screen size is not as advertised
virgil sylvester✓ Verified Purchase•January 10, 2024
The seller says the screen is 5.5 inches. In reality it is only about 2.2 inches. I bought this for the bigger screen so my 93 yr. old mother could see the screen better. Other than the screen size the phone is fine.
great phone for my elderly mother

I got this phone for my elderly mother. She wanted just a basic phone to make calls, and she says it's the best cellphone that she's ever used because the keypad is easy for her to push the buttons and because the screen is big and bright for her to read. She's very pleased with it, and I'm happy that it works so well for her.
