The light comes on when car makes contact. The pole bends over and does not come back up straight when car makes contact. Once the car touches it that makes the light come on and the pole bends backward, I back off a few inches to allow pole to straighten out.

After getting our garage floors done, we didn't want to damage the new floors by drilling into the concrete with a stop block, so I looked for alternatives. We had purchased a car stop from an organization store and it never stayed in place. This product works great! I did buy some double sided carpet tape to keep it from moving (just in case), but even before I used the tape, it didn't move out of place. I taped it down more because I might bump it when walking more so than it moving when I park my car. I'm very happy with my purchase.

As other reviewers note, these don't stand straight up because the stand comes in several pieces. However, they work well, and help us stop our cars in just the right place. More fun than a tennis ball hanging from the ceiling, and a better guide than a stop that just sits on the floor.
I think I could get it to stand straighter with pvc pipe or even a foam insulating tube. I might try that sometime.
