Decent low-cost solution

I used this to locate breaks in a Husqvarna Automower boundary wire, buried 4" deep. This did pretty well, considering a comparable pro tool would cost greater than hundred dollars just to rent, and $800-$1200 to purchase. I didn't get anywhere near the 1000' feet claimed range, partially because the boundary wire was stranded rather than solid. Signal strength dropped off significantly after about 75', and I had to cup the (very) cheap buds over my ears to try to block outside noise. It's an okay solution for very occasional use, just be prepared to spend time searching instead of what you'd spend in money for a better tool.
Tracing multiple wires can be tricky.

I was looking for a break in irrigation control wires under a new parking lot. I connected them all together at one end and started looking. They seemed to go the full distance with no problem. I then realized that one wire of the 6 was connected all the way through but the other 5 were broken. The machine worked great but you need to trace one wire at a time.
Must swing like a pendulum over the surface area.

This was used to trace power wire to well head buried 3 feet below grade about 80 feet from the house(40 feet further than two uncles thought). I used the black lead to dirt ground bar and red to non-powered buried electric wire. You must swing the black reader end like a pendulum just above the ground surface. When you hear low to no tone while swinging, that is the direction of the wire. Walk unit left or right until the quite part, while still swinging, is between your feet. When I got to the end of line, the noise was kinda continuous. So I dug straight down and hit right on top of well cap.
