Inexpensive way to install an EV charger

If you have a modern dryer out let in your garage, the SplitVolt splitter switch is an inexpensive way to get a Level 2 charger for your EV in the time it takes to buy one and plug it in. If your dryer outlet is an older three-prong outlet, it's inexpensive to have an electrician change it to a 4 prong grounded outlet safe to use with EVs. The 24 amps the SplitVolt switch provides via the dryer outlet is more than sufficient to charge an EV battery overnight. The automatic switching from EV to dryer and back works perfectly whenever the dryer is in use. Use the switch with a SplitVolt Level 2 portable charger with a 4 prong plug and it's all you need. Much cheaper than buying an EV wall charger and paying an electrician to wire it to your home's electrical panel. One thing I worry about: the switch's LED status lights remain on all the time, so it's an open question for me whether that will cause them to fail prematurely.

This is my second unit. The first one I never even plugged in because it had something loose inside the box. It would rattle around, nope not plugging that in.

My second one plugs in and works fine. I am happy with that. But it has a high pitch transformer sound when the EV circuit is enabled (so anytime the dryer isn't running). It's pretty loud. I can hear it 5 feet from my laundry room, little high pitch buzz sound.

I plugged in my EVSE and was able to do 24 amps and charge my ID.4 at 19 miles per hour. Pretty happy with that.

Just not sure about this buzzing noise. After one month of charging almost every day I can say no problems!

Permanently mounted it to the laundry room wall now.

Auto Switch works, Chatter when dryer port sensed

The auto switch works fine when the load is placed on either the dryer or the EV port. My only complaint is the constant low volume chatter sound when the dryer port is being operated. Whether the dryer drum is turning or not, the Splitvolt has a chattering sound, if the dryer is turned on. (Control panel on, drum not turning.) Once the drum and heater are turned on, the Splitvolt can be heard switching the relay to the dryer port and the EV LED extinguishes. (But the chatter can still be heard)

The EV port is the default mode if there is no load on either port. (Also, no chatter in this mode) The Dryer port has priority if there is a load request detected on both ports. Both ports cannot be operated at the same time, the typical dryer circuit would not handle the wattage demand. This is normal and the reason you would use this switch box. When the dryer is turned off, it switches back to the EV port.

Dryer power is not displayed in Splitvolt display when running, only the EV power is shown when it is running.

If this low volume chatter is normal, there should be an explanation in the manual. If I'm contacted with an explanation, I'll update this review.
