This product I have heard of before, but had never tried. I actually love the idea of using natural fruits and vegetables as dyes for food and fabrics as it has been done for hundreds of years. Purple is an amazing color, so I thought I would try two shades of it. My medium was french vanilla pudding. Sadly, it has a yellow color to it, but it still worked out.
There are no instructions or measurement suggestions on the package. I had read online that the powder has an earthy smell to it. I don't know if I was expecting sweet because of sweet potatoes, but it is earthy. It is hard to place the scent, but I quickly imagined my pudding tasting unpleasant.
Because I was using the type of pudding you have to cook (something else I had never tried before), I cooked the pudding in one bowl and had the powder waiting in the two separate cups. I figured pouring in hot pudding would help "melt" everything together. It didn't. It was very hard to mix in and I ended up with a lot of lumps. My idea of a white cake would have worked better if I mixed it in with dry ingredients.
The bottom layer had two teaspoons and the top layer had one teaspoon for a cup and a half each. The smell wasn't the best, but I was attributing part of this to the cooked pudding. It was colorful, but I didn't feel crazy about eating it. I decided to chill my creation overnight and taste it in the morning. It tasted good! The sweetness of the pudding was present and I couldn't taste the purple sweet potato's earthy linger at all.
Besides having lumps, my pudding was pretty to look at and tasty to eat. I'm sure there much be other tricks and tips online to using this powder. I just took you along my first unguided journey. I would recommend it for those who like exploring products like this as well as those who already use it. I wonder if you could even make paint from it.
