Hard to Find a Place to Attach It
MVMBuyer✓ Verified PurchaseJanuary 17, 2024
The Victorio VKP1024 Deluxe Hand Operated Grain Mill was great, except there was no place in my house to attach it. I had to take it to my daughter's house to use it, and the only place at my daughter's I could use the mill was a granite-top table. The instructions say to attach the mill to a surface with straight sides and to push it all the way against the surface until it stops. That means you have to have a counter with at least a 2 inch overhang, and my counters and my daughter's counters have only a 1 inch overhang. Also, the counters have to have straight sides, which means if you have rounded or beveled edges on your counter tops, the mill will not stay put at all. So, even if you have a bar where you could attach the mill, if the bar does not have straight sides, it just will not attach. However, it was easy to attach the mill to the 2 inch thick granite table top, and it stayed in place with only occasional re-tightening.

As far as the operation of the mill, I loved it, and the instructions were clear. A lot of problems people have had with mills is likely that they haven't read the instructions or the instructions were hard to understand. These instructions say that before using, grind 2 cups of plain, white rice to clean the mill, then throw the rice away. They say to expect small metal particles in the rice, but I did not see any.

The adjustment knob stayed in position and the flour seemed fine enough, although I am new to grinding flour and making bread. The handle was easy to turn, although I did get a workout when grinding 7 cups of flour! The wheat berries fed through smoothly and the flour dropped into the bowl without making a mess.

My next mill was a less-expensive Back to Basics that is supposed to be the same as the VICTORIO VKP1012, and the pictures sure do look the same. Let me assure you, the Back to Basics does not operate the same as this Victorio VKP1024! The Back to Basic assembles very differently than this Victorio VKP1012, and it is definitely not as good. I'm still looking for a hand operated grain mill.

If Victorio would fix the attachment problem of the VKP1024 so that it would attach to a standard 1 inch counter overhang, I would definitely repurchase it.
Great at grinding spices

I will write a review based on the function I use it and that is basically to grind whole species (black and white pepper, cumin, caraway, coriander seeds, dill seeds, fennel, etc) I'm a sausage maker and at this, the mill does a great job. The coarseness can be adjusted from fine to coarse, however it is hard to reduce from coarse to fine on the fly because the spice will not allow the auger to be set tighter without emptying it first. Before this mill I burned out two kitchenaid coffee grinders and the spices never grinded evenly. With this mill the spices result in a more consistent size. About the use of this mill for cereals such as wheat, rice, etc, I will guess the output will be too small for the need of many users. At grinding species is ok since species are used at small quantities even in very large batches, but if you need to grind several pounds of flour probably this hand powered mill is not for you and maybe you should take a look at another model of the same vendor with a motor option. I cannot rate durability at least for now but some parts could have been made of more durable material such as a plastic washer between the auger and the handle. Even when it looks made of stainless steel this mill is made mostly of brushed aluminum, but the inner parts of the mill are stainless steel. I think you get a decent product for the price.
Update: I found the mill cannot grind annatto seeds. Even though the annatto seed appears to be a dry seed and not oily, but after grinding a few it forms a hard dry paste around the auger and that's it, the mill gets clogged and no more seeds can go down the grinding path.
Update: As you grind, the handle movement tightens the bolt that holds the handle and it results in a gradually finer grinding and it ends on the auger being completely tight and no allowing the product to grind at all. I hope this can be solved by installing a washer. I will keep you updated
Everyone thinks they're tough until it's time to mill the flour.

I just turned a bag of pinto beans into a nice jar of bean flour, after cleaning it with a hopper of white rice, and now am enjoying some sweet endorphins while I admire the results.
The unit is crazy simple, easy to get up and running. The flour is fine and consistent, in fact It might not go coarse enough to do my beer malts with, but I will try it out and update this when I do. It's a good little workout on the arms, but that's how love gets put into the flour. I am very excited to put this thing to the test with all sorts of different things; oats, peas, coffee, etc.
The best most affordable grain mill

Our 12 year old daughter uses it. Its that simple to use. It grids wheat berries perfectly for bread, pie crust, and spices. It brings real nutrition to starches. It may take some time to get used to the flavor, however its way heavier than the alternative. The white all purpose flour is chemically made.
Good, simple, sturdy grinder

Pros:

- Solid build - 3/16" aluminum, single piece body - nothing to break.
- One moving part (grinding head), seems pretty strong
- Easy to clean, seems rust-proof
- Does not damage counter-tops (it's clamp-mount), due to a rubber pad and good pressure distribution.
- Grinds predictably, not super-dust-like fine, but fine enough.
- Can grind many things (nuts, seeds, etc) as longs as they are fairly small (see Cons)
- looks nice
- Thin enough to be stored in a kitchen drawer, fully assembled

Cons:
- Manual (Requires effort) - but that's understood.
- Very slow with flax seeds (must be set to very coarse - back nut off a lot), but does the job.
- Large grains or nuts (eg almonds) need to be chopped first - they simply don't fit through the teeth.
- Not easily suited for use with a handheld drill (Yes I thought about making it electric for bigger jobs). Can probably be done but you'll need to clamp the square head (see photos) so a big chuck is needed - you can't just use a socket wrench as you need to apply a pulling force to it... Can't fault it for this, it was hardly a design goal.

In short, it's worth it if you need 2 cups or less, infrequently. With hard grains I was able to do about 1 cup per 2 minutes of cranking, with millet and similar grains it is faster.

Finally, there is a certain pleasure in connecting with your food in a way an electric motor probably won't.
