Great little stone

A great little dual grit sharpener. Its round shape and carrying case make it easy to carry on the belt or chaps pocket in the field for touching up an ax or other cutting tool. Also easy to find a space for it in the chainsaw toolbox.
I stopped using oil over 40 years ago, preferring to use water and a drop or 2 of dish washing liquid. Before use, I soak the stone in water until the air bubbles cease to rise, then add a few drops of the detergent. This keeps the surface of the sharpener from becoming clogged with the slurry created by the sharpening process and allows the stone to work more efficiently. The stone is dipped in the water to clear the slurry and detergent reapplied as necessary.
For me, the soap also makes it easy to see how the sharpening process is proceeding by observing how the edge "cuts" under the slurry as the edge gains sharpness. It also makes the stone easy to clean and absent of any oily residues, making it easier to store without contaminating other gear, including gloves that might be used.
I use a marker to color the edge before sharpening to ensure metal is removed evenly. A bench grinder will be faster, but use a file instead to restore edges that have been abused and finish with a stone. Even if one were available, which they aren't in the field, I don't like heating an ax edge with a grinder.
Fingertip gloves are supplied and it is recommended that they or other finger protection be used. My personal experience is one of being able to get an ax shaving sharp in a very short period of time. A slip and it is possible to sustain a serious cut or lose a fingertip! The finger gloves are easily rinsed for cleaning. The pouch is real leather and appears to have some kind of external coating that i hope doesn't split as it ages. The $6.99 price is a bargain.
