Forward is forward and when you pull the switch back it's backward"¦ so to turn it off you need to get the tiny thing right in the middle. It's hard to do for my 2.5 year old boy but my 3.5 year old daughter can do it. It's just frustrating because it's always on and I keep having to change the battery. Other then that it is adorableeeee the light is so cute and cozy we love turning the light off and watching it go

My grandson loves this train. The forward/backward switch can be a bit difficult for young hands to maneuver. We bought rechargeable batteries for it because it does go through batteries quickly when used as much as my grandson has used it.
