Overall, this is a decent electric fireplace for the price. As far as "fake" fires go, yes, it looks fake but it's not bad. The crackling sound is pretty tinny and seems most real sounding at lowest volume. One thing to note, there are two LED lights on the interior roof of the unit. If you have a reflective hearth as I do, which is polished granite, you will see these in the reflection. See my picture. I wish I had known this before purchasing and installing. This would have been a deal breaker for me. Hopefully my review will make others aware of this.

My family really loves this electric fireplace. The Western 33 Low size fit just about perfectly in my old builder grade sheet metal fireplace. All I had to do was wire up an outlet in there and slide the insert in. I made a couple of sheet metal extensions to fill in the extra space along the sides. The height was perfect.
Overall, the look of the flames is pretty good by electric fireplace standards. The crackling log sound is reasonably convincing. The heat output is good but not fantastic. Definitely take the manufacturer's advice and do not rely on this as the sole heat source in a particular room.
I rated 4 rather than 5 stars because of the look of the faux brick surround behind the logs. It lacks texture and isn't very convincing. There are also 2 easily visible plastic zip ties holding the logs down, which doesn't fit well with a fireplace look. Finally, the crackling log sound is only activated via remote. It would be nice if all controls were located in the control panel just in case you lose the remote.

Took a little effort but my daughter got it in and fits to a tee! It looks like it belongs there as the background on it is brick like our fireplace. It keeps our front room nice and warm and the whole family loves it.
