Returned. I've had an earlier model of the same timer for years and it worked fine. But Grandson decided he'd like this one (he's 4) soooooooooooo ... time to buy me another one. This one, unfortunately, can barely be heard 6-10 feet away with "normal" noise generated in a kitchen that's being "cooked" in ... if you're in another part of the house -- forget it. I got a different mechanical model as a replacement -- same price but different look/design -- it works just fine and CAN be heard over kitchen noise.

This keeps excellent time, and rings long enough to not be missed if you're doing other things (which is why you set a timer, after all.) It's much better than the old timer we've kept for decades, and that I've reconditioned countless times, because we never saw anything in stores that compared.

Upon receipt, I noticed that the timer still inside the packaging made more noise than I expected. After opening it I saw that the single screw holding the mechanical time inside of the white plastic housing was loose. From the bottom I rotated it position where it seemed to fit in places and tightened the screw and tested it. At first I was bothered by the fact that the resting position was with the timer not aligned on "0." However I realized that the alarm starts sounding when it indicates "0" and continued to rotate until the alarm stops. This alarm is a long one and you will not miss it.

I've been using it for 3 months now and it works great! Ring is loud enough but not too crazy. If you have loud music or background noise in the house, and you are like 3 rooms away from kitchen, then you can't really blame it for not hearing it.
There was once when I thought it stops working. But then I realize there's an instruction at the bottom saying you need to turn to at least 30 minutes first, then adjust to the time you want. So if you turn it directly to 5 minutes only, it might not ring when time is up.

I wanted a mechanical timer (no batteries). From the reviews I was expecting this to replicate the sturdy, well engineered timer that Mom had. But of course, for the price I should have known better, right? It's very lightweight and the case and dial just look and feel flimsy. It does tick, and it does ring, though I haven't yet checked it against the clock for accuracy. The ring is nice and long, as advertised. After it rings, it continues to tick a bit more, and then makes a few more halfhearted little dingles, which makes me laugh every time. I am not expecting this bit of machinery to last very long, but should I be proven wrong, I will gladly revise my review.
