Solid performing hitch mount bike rack
Sam•October 30, 2017
I bought this based on other reviews and the price. I've owned Yakima racks and others. I needed a receiver hitch mount rack to hold a townie bike with 26" wheels and a 29r mountain bike. Hauled the two bikes from Colorado to California with no problems. 29r was stolen off the rack (thieves cut through the heavy-duty cable) the night I got to Eureka. Bought a Priority bike with 700 wheels, put a rain cover over bikes and drove through rain for a week's journey to California down Hwy 101. The Swagman held up beautifully, still using it. This rack works great, folds down when not using it so you can get into truck bed, does not sway and overall a fantastic buy.
Looks good but some missing details...

Just received this unit and have assembled it for use on our motorhome. It appears it will work just fine how I wanted to warn people about a couple things.
The piece that goes into your 2" receiver requires a threaded bolt and only a SWAGMAN locking bolt will work. This is due to the treading part.
The instructions are not very good and I have a few extra parts with no explanation as to what they are for.
The anti-wobble feature is nothing more than the threaded receiver bolt.

Absolutely superior product!

My recent trip of 1000 miles with our two bikes on this rack reminded me of how much I love our Swagman. I resisted changing from a roof mount to a hitch mount because the extra length makes parking an issue, but advancing age and our purchase of a minivan made lifting bikes to the roof impractical. After researching all kinds of options, I settled on a hitch mounted rack system and then on the Swagman. I am 100% satisfied!
1. Most hitch mounted racks sway back and forth when bikes are on them which seems ungainly-perhaps even dangerous. The Swagman incorporates a bolt with the retainer pin which keeps the rack steady-a slick idea.
2. After a one-time adjustment of the "wheel baskets", it's a snap to just drop the first bike in, lift the vertical post and put in the pin which holds it steady and put up the second bike.
3. The bikes are secured by foam rubber covered retainers which slide down the shaft and lock themselves tight with a ratcheting action. The whole mount/dismount process takes less than two minutes.
4. Other considerations are: the hitch retaining pin and the foam retainers can all be locked, the wheels never have to come off the bike, and though the rack does't tilt, you can still open the trunk of many cars (not my minivan, though).
I grumble every time I use our other rack when we need space for 4 bikes and I have to finesse their placement, stretch rubber fasteners and watch the bikes sway back and forth as I go down the road. The engineering of the Swagman really is Swagman XC Cross-Country 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1/1/4 and 2-Inch Receiver)exceptional!

Hey Look! Nice Rack!

Nice fit and finish. Seems to be well constructed. Mounted it and fitted our two full sized bikes on the back of my Suburban to see how it would work. Looks like it will do just fine. I would recommend getting the additional straps or using bungy cords on your bikes though. It looks at least as well made as more expensive racks that I looked at in person before finding this one.
Update... We used this to carry two adult bikes 230 plus miles. It worked well in that it was east to mount the bikes to and it did it's job. My only concern that I had was the amount of wobble and sway it had after turning corners of going over bumps. It worked, but it it had me worried about the $2000 worth of bikes on the back of my truck.
Don't forget to bungee your bikes on either as I would not trust the arms only to hold my bike on it.

Good quality.

Very easy to put together. At first glance they see flimsy compared with similar models of other brands, but they are actually very sturdy. We drove with 2 mountain bikes off road on a very bumpy 4x4 trail, and everything was fine. Next time we go I would add a little more padding where the grips hold the bike bar. I also have a suggestion for improvement for the manufacturer - you should make the hitch connection part such that it can be installed with the bend up or down. On a high vehicle it would be more convenient if the bent was going down rather than up, placing the bike holder lower and closer to the ground.
