Many of the newer VW hood prop struts are failing. Make sure you put a streamer on it so someone doesn't try and close the hood with this on it.
This little clamp is a helpful addition to the toolbox

Changing struts on a hatch or hood on your car is difficult enough without having to worry about jury-rigged braces slipping, and letting the piece come crashing down on head or hand. The best way is having a partner hold the hood or hatch up, but if you're working alone, this clamp will ensure safety and make the job simple. Good quality, and won't damage the piston surface on your strut. Recommended
Beefy and Strong. Good purchase.

I cannot work without this. The hood support struts on many vehicles fail, especially in cold weather. I no longer have to occupy a set of vice grips or pry bar to keep the hood open while I'm working. This fits most vehicles. Besides technicians, I would recommend that owners of cars with failed supports keep one in their glove compartments. Don't try to jump start your car or change your air filter while holding the hood open with your hand or head! I plan to buy a few more for my tool box.
