Blows sideways in a good wind. 20 to 40 mph
Merle F. Raymond✓ Verified Purchase•March 16, 2018
Order this only if you have an area out of the wind to hang it. Out in the country where we live the wind catches the plastic flipper bottom and acts as a sail which allows the feeder to tip sideways and empty the content on the ground in short order. I have a yankee feeder with the wire around the outside that activates if a squirrel steps on it which I believe is the "flipper". I could be wrong but that feeder works fine. I should have got the one with the perches that drop if a heavy animal tries to perch to access the feed. The birds don't seem to care for it much either as the old one will empty before the "tipper" is hardly touched. I tried leaving the good feeder empty and they still won't use it. I goes down very slowly. Great if you want to save on bird seed as long as the wind doesn't blow too hard.

The least expensive of the "Anti-varmint" series from Droll Yankees, but still pricey. Until one who have been plagued by feeders emptying "spontaneously", the only clue being increasingly obese squirrel, and hordes of flightless blackbirds, their spindly legs strsining under the weight of their massive paunches.
OK, the real stuff. This will accommodate cardinal, finch, hatches, smaller woodpeckers, titmouse, etc. Smaller Bluejay will be able to eat here. But the big birds will rapidly learn that there is no free lunch with this feeder. Easy to clean, and has a huge capacity. Dispenses sunflower, mixed seed and nuts, some dried fruit, though fruit will tend to accumulate and gum up the base a bit.
This feeder (we have 2) has paid for itself in the first year in elimination of pilfered seed. Powder-coated metal, stainless steel, and polycarbonate make up this well-engineered device. Clears pretty quickly after a snowstorm, and seed column stays dry in rain. The feeding stations WILL require a little cleaning with a feeder tube brush, water blast, etc. to keep the service area free of residue. This should be done anyway to reduce disease potential of dirty/moldy seed.
We've had our oldest one 3 years, and no issues. With our other "Droll" feeders, any service/replacement issues have been handled quickly and often for free, so we're confident this feeder will be a long-lasting addition to our garden, landscape, and integrated pest management program.

The Best ... Period!

For the best chance to stop the squirrels, this is the bird feeder you must have. I have five of them and I've finally feel like I'm winning the "save the seed for the birds" battle. Quality product with high seed capacity, and the company stands behind any problems. This is the BEST, period.
Waiting for solution to falling tray has now been solved
Bill P✓ Verified Purchase•February 25, 2016
I just received my Droll Yankee Tipper which seemed to be an excellent feeder. However, the tray keeps falling off as there doesn't seem to be any way to lock it on the bottom of the feeder. The slot are not notched so as to lock it on. I have sent Droll Yankee an email to ask them for assistance with this problem. Since it is a weekend, I don't expect to hear from them until the first of next week. (2/29/16). If they solve the problem for me, I will write a follow up to this post. I had planned to purchase additional feeders, but will hold off until this problem is solved.
Update: I mentioned this to my son who examined the feeder and found I did not twist it on enough to lock it in position. He accomplished this and the feeder is fine. Consequently, I gave it another star. Not 5 because it is not explained in the directions that the base must be turned to the next notch to lock it in position. Also, I am now waiting to see how the birds react.

Squirrel resistant? Yes. But......
Mark P Watson✓ Verified Purchase•September 29, 2015
I had high hopes for this feeder. It was appealing to avoid seed waste, while still maintaining a squirrel resistant design. Yes, it's squirrel resistant, but there are a few things less appealing. 1. The birds do not prefer this feeder. I read this in other reviews and it remained true for me. Other feeders will literally have a line waiting a turn at the feeding ports, while this one sits barely touched. I've tried multiple strategies to improve bird usage, but it just boils down to they prefer a different perch (I don't know if it's the transparent tray, or if they are uncomfortable without a firm grip). 2. The baffle or feeding ports have gotten clogged and I have had to shake the feeder for it to dispense seed. Disappointed with the feeder given the cost. I would definitely consider purchasing another one, either the Brome or the Magnet squirrel resistant feeder (my birds love these and they're more affordable).
