These Astaire-Rogers musicals are simply impossible to dislike, even if they all aren't necessarily of equal quality. And again, it isn't the material, it's what the performers do with it. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers don't just have chemistry, they have alchemy, in that they are able to transmute the raw material of musical comedy into pure cinematic joy. Not only that, but Edward Everett Horton and Eric Blore also do very nicely in their supporting comedic roles. Music-wise, I wasn't familiar with many of the tunes, but I'm up for Gershwin any time. My favorite number here was 'Let's Call the Whole Thing Off.' A cute song, to be sure, but having them dance/tap in roller skates was an inspired choice. There was even an excellent ballet showcase in the finale, courtesy of Harriet Hoctor. Overall, not their absolute best, but it was still top tier.
