I was happy to find the Peterson kit

I have an old fireplace with an ITT General Controls valve that was leaking gas. I've been told that the grease in the valves, exposed to heat, over time disappears. The fireplace pan had been installed backwards, with the gas pipe entering on the left and the valve on the left.
I was happy to find the Peterson kit. It was not hard to make it work. The Peterson valve is symmetrical, so it can be mounted on the left of a fireplace pan and it's low profile, which keeps it away from the heat. I had to move the pilot light from the right to the left of the pan and cut threads in a pipe nipple to reinstall the old nozzle.
It's working great. And one thing I really like about this valve is that the actual safety valve in it is a replaceable part.

Much harder to use than expected

The gas log system I have was designed to have the gas control mounted on top of a vertical pipe while this one has a horizontal gas outlet. I had to turn the unit 90 degrees and then the heat shield would not stay on so I used a stainless steel hose clamp to hold it on. It works fine but it took over an hour to figure out how to adapt it to my burner set.
