Great Quality Box, BUT a real Knucklebuster
Salvatore A Casale•June 9, 2018
So I read a lot of the reviews and still purchased this box due to to low profile and quality of which I really like. The downside however is trying to wire a matching 50amp, #6 wire into this guy...as the reviews warned. For anyone reading this, here's some advice. Make sure you have LOTS of time on your hands, a good pair of electrical pliers to battle the box and patience of a saint. Whatever you do, DON'T RUSH and analyze how the wires go in as there really is about 1/8th of an inch room in the back of the box. This causes you to form a 90 degree bend, which for me is not appropriate and scary but there's really no other way to do it. It would be better if Reliance made a 1/2 inch deeper box or redesigned the plug so wires are inserted from the side instead of the rear. Reliance has a real engineering design flaw on their hands but they probably sell thousands of these and really don't care. Reliance also sells a larger 50amp box, but it's plastic (i think ABS) and I can't see myself installing a plastic box outdoors.
Alterations needed
Mitch•April 13, 2018
It works but only after really altering the screw holes because there isn't enough room to push thick 6 guage wires back in the box after you hook them up. The box needs to be thicker! I work out and you just can't bend 6 ga wires at the angle needed for this to fit properly. I did what I could and pushed it down as low as possible then made new screw holes and then sealed the area with rtv. Also, either the plug I bought or this thing is too small/big to fit properly. I had to shave down the prongs to fit the plug. Not cool.
Do not recommend. Plug prongs are malformed from the factory.

The quality of the box itself looked great when we were installing it. I like the design and the box seems very sturdy. Unfortunately, when I went to try to use the outlet with a twist-lock plug, I realized that the prongs in the outlet were malformed and didn't line up properly with the plug holes. It was super close...but off enough that I couldn't get the plug to insert. I had to use needle-nose pliers to try to re-form the prongs. Eventually I was able to get the plug to insert, and it twist-locked successfully. However, when I went to remove the plug it wouldn't come out. Took alot of tugging and pulling to get it free. At this point, I'm considering returning this and putting a better quality plug in. For almost $70, I expected more from this product. It's obviously lacking manufacturing quality control
Good but frustrating.

Ok, if you are looking for easy install, this ain't it! It seems to be fairly good quality, but for 50 amps you need 6 gauge wire, and their is not enough space between the back of the plug where the wires are inserted, and the back of the box. If they would make the box just 1/2" to an 1 inch deeper, the install would be soooo much easier. Also, one of the screws that secures one of the wires is blocked by the box's body. I had to unscrew the plug from the faceplate to loosen and tighten the one wire screw. If you have patience, and don't get frustrated easily, the box is good and secure when it is done.
Nice box.

I like that this box comes with the flip lid, with weatherproofing foam. The Generac model I was looking at doesn't come with one, must purchase separately for $23, really?? However, there are a couple minor issues I see. First is how the plug would fit into the box may create stress from the weight of the cord. My 50 amp cord is heavy. Therefore I will put a hook in the wall below to tie off the cord to reduce the stress on the outlet. Second, as others have stated, it is a bit tight to get the 6 gauge wires in there and get cover secured. All and all I am happy with it and hope it holds up over the years.
