Love this stuff.

I keep using this stuff for years. I love the smell and it is not hazardous to different finishes and most new chemicals are. I have used it on every firearm I use. I am not paying $25 for a bottle of solvent or cleaner for a firearm. If used correctly it works just fine. So here's a tip, swap the bore with this stuff and let it soak as per instructions, then start cleaning the action or bolt of the firearm then use the brush then use clean patches (repeat as necessary). Then couple passes with lubricating oil after all solvent has been cleaned out. Simple and it works. I don't spend 30 hours cleaning one firearm as it is more harm than good. Reason I put this on my comment is a lot of new shooters get so confused on what to do they don't want to shoot because they've spent all that time keeping it spotless. Well then what's the point of having a firearm, ATV, or truck if you don't use it then sits and looks pretty. A waste of money.
An old standard still works!

The old standard! Even though the formulation has been modified a bit for health and safety concerns. No mater: it still works. A great cleaner; use it by itself, or use it first before applying specialized carbon, lead, or copper remover. For most people, however, this solvent is all you need as a gun cleaning solvent. In this size, it is a great buy!

One tip: pour some from the large bottle into a smaller bottle, especially one with a needle tip. That will allow you to just right amount on patches and brushes,or to trickle a bit down the bore just before you wipe it out, or brush.

Second tip: quickly clean out chambers, bores, cylinders with Hoppe's and. Nylon brush and patches, to remove the loose fouling; then apply a liberal amount of No. 9, and let it sit overnight or for 24-hours. Or even 48-hours. Not all gun cleaners are safe to use overnight! Then clean as usual. Time for soaking saves quite a bit of work.

If you are going to store the gun, repeat the entire overnight cleaning for a second time. Then wipe inside and out with a quality gun oil or preservative grease like RIG. Clean again before shooting.
The last bottle of bore cleaner I'll ever have to buy.

It's sad to say this, but this one pint bottle of the time-tested king of lead solvents will probably be my "lifetime supply" in the years that remain for me in shooting sports. The large bottle allows me to pour off a little into a shot glass for dipping patches and brushes, without contaminating the supply bottle. Best of all, the heavy duty plastic bottle won't be as prone to breakage as I get somewhat clumsier in my years of decline.
No Frills. Works As It Should

Good all around Bore cleaner. Never had any issues with it. No problems with the finish on any of my weapons. People constantly complain about the harsh smell, use it in a well ventilated area. I'm sure it's not good for your body so don't drink it. Although I use different cleaners at times, kerosene based and the ones with no odor, Hoppes still has a place in my range bag. It works. Simple as that. I can't attest to some reviews stating the glass bottle version is more potent that the newer plastic bottle type. I see no difference
Still the best cleaner

Hoppe's No. 9 is the brand I started using back in the '70s. It is also the brand my father and his father before him used to clean their shotguns. When my dad died in the early '80s, I stopped shooting for a long time. An enthusiastic friend re-introduced me to targets and clays. He used some of the newfangled cleaning sprays and potions available on the market today. I figured with modern chemistry things must have improved and gave them a try as well. They sprayed fast and dried things out like a great degreaser, but did not loosen the residue or make cleaning easier. On a hunch, out came the old bottle of Hoppe's #9 cleaner. It went on smooth as silk and left the barrel with a nice wet film, which softened the stuff inside and made it much faster and easier to brush and swab the barrel clean. Sometimes the old ways are still the best. Hoppe's is one great example of that.
