I bought this vest for my dog (90 pound Irish Wolfhound/sheepdog) on Wednesday so I could take him on an overnight canoe trip down a river this weekend. We were caught by a gust of wind and turned sideways at the entrance to a tight spot where the water was accelerating, and were thrown broadside into a partially submerged log. We capsized immediately and were thrown under the 42 degree water. We both surfaced at the same time, and I was able to catch hold of the grab handle on his vest and pull him to me. We impacted two more partially submerged snags before I was able to beach us on a sandbar. What happened after is out of scope of this review, but if he had not been wearing this vest, or if its straps had not stayed intact, I am fairly sure i would have lost him, and probably myself as well. I don't often write reviews, and I don't often buy safety equipment that isn't military grade or better. But this vest worked when we needed it to, and I can't say anything better than that.

I ordered an XXS.
The jacket fit great. The neck felt like a good fit with enough give to make it a bit bigger or smaller.
The jacket JUST fit his chest/stomach with the Velcro. The clasp had more give.
If your dog has a 14" chest the Velcro tabs will just touch. I still felt that Timothy was safe.
I ordered it that way because he is a Chihuahua and I didn't want to much bulk around his neck.
I felt that the sturdiness of the neck held his head up great.
In the video he is actually in water above his head for a minute. I did NOT try it in deeper water, because it's a beach and there were a lot of waves that day and I wanted to be able to grab him just in case.
I did look at a lot of jackets and feel I choose the best one for a medium price on the market.

We got 2 of these for our 2 Labs. Both about 80lbs. We had them try them on at home a few times to get used to them before going on the boat the first time. Worked great. They did not try to get out or object to wearing them. Insisted for safety they remain on. I did use their water collars for leash use not the vest hook. It didn't seem sturdy enough

The media could not be loaded. Like product a lot except there is a very wide range from small to medium (20-50lb instead of 5 lb increments). I bought medium for a 20 lb corgi puppy who will likely grow another 5 lb and it is extremely large on him. Corgis have a unique body shape to say the least so we are always on the cusp of toys/small and medium dogs. His 20lb body doesnt run too comfortably right now that it is set on the tighest setting and jacket bulges at corners but I am hopeful that a few more pounds and a bit more use will make it more comfortable. That said he seems to love wearing it because he knows we are going to the "special park" where there is swimming whenever I bust it out of the trunk of the car. Seems just as durable as the outward hound one I bought for my other corgi in large (which didn't have a red color option). Top strap is a bit less sturdy looking but I don't anticipate lifting him by strap. Bought it to keep him from accidentally rolling when turning sharply in local stream and to give a little more confidence and safety while swimming with larger dogs around who make waves that can overwhelm the little ones.

Update. I bought this in 2014. Since then my boy has grown up to be nearly 4o lbs. Jacket is awesome and has held up incredibly well for almost a decade. He is extremely aquatic so it has gotten a lot of use. Upgraded to 5 stars due to value for money. Highly recommend.
