Solid wood cabinets - no pressboard - excellent quality.
J. MartinFebruary 6, 2018
I bought this file cabinet (two of them, actually) from Amazon after conducting a fairly exhaustive search for *real* wood file cabinets. Most everything I saw everywhere was junk - cheap particleboard for the most part, and the stuff that was wood wasn't anything to write home about. I finally found these on Amazon and had my reservations because for $130 each I didn't have much in the way of expectations.

They were delivered yesterday, by my useless/lazy UPS guy, who left them in the driveway in a pouring rain storm rather than putting them another 10 feet further on my covered front porch. Both boxes were saturated, so I thought I might be in trouble. The packaging is excellent - the cabinets were packed surrounded by styrofoam on all sides, such that the actual cabinet parts had no contact with the cardboard boxes at all. From there, my thoughts:
1. It took about 1.5 hours to put the first one together, and maybe a little under an hour to put the second one together. The instructions are in English. They're in really small typeset, so you might need your reading glasses, but they sound like they were written by a native speaker. The directions were exactly right. I'm a skilled person - I built a house before - so if you are not, it might take you a little longer to put it together, but it's not difficult and you don't need a second person.

2. These things are SOLID wood, and I mean all of it - the top, the drawer front, sides, and back, the cabinet sides, the rails. The only parts that weren't solid wood were the drawer bottoms - thin plywood - and the cabinet back - also thin plywood. No idea what the species is but it's not pine. Nevertheless, everything is constructed of solid wood - even the hidden braces and parts like that. Even the pull knobs are solid wood.

3. Cabinets are made in Vietnam according to the labels on the cabinet. No odd smells from the cabinet, but I noticed my garage smelled a little funky from the packaging this morning.

4. All of the hardware was there, and in the exact amounts needed. Everything was labeled properly. It comes with an anti-tip bracket, which is really just a zip-tie and a metal picture loop that screws to the wall. If you use some common sense you don't need it, i.e. don't pull totally full drawers out all the way sitting in thin air.

5. Once it's put together it is heavy. You wouldn't want to move it far with the drawers in it, and forget about moving it around when it's full of files.

Overall, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about these cabinets. The construction quality is very impressive, especially for the price and that it's from overseas. The drawers pull out most of the way - about 80% - so the last couple of files you have to pull forward to access - but other than that it is a very nice looking piece of furniture, light years ahead of the junk I found at the two major brick & mortar places and beyond anything else I found online.
I was happy to find a filing cabinet that looks nice

I was happy to find a filing cabinet that looks nice, so I bought it. The only thing it has going for it, is the looks.
For function it is terrible. The drawers hang up when you try to open them. Don't expect the nice rolling drawers of a real filing cabinet. Also, the drawers don't open all the way. If the drawer is full of files, you will not be able to get to the ones in the back.
For the money, they could do a much better job.
The only reason I haven't returned it, is the thought of having to take it all apart.
So, save your money and don't buy it in the first place.
Great Filing Cabinet!

Had to write a review as I love this File cabinet! It is all wood, high quality, fits files perfectly, did need to put a spacer in back so as to be able to do filing. Very easy to assemble, instructions were very clear. The only fault is a very large wood knot on the top front.. It doesn't really bother me. The amazing thing is it matches our oak bedroom set almost perfectly, so we decided to put it in our bedroom and it looks great.
Well worth the money for a nice piece of furniture for light filing.
Dissappointed in performance.

I was so excited to receive this in the mail. Then the disappointments began: One of the factory screwed screws, into the top metal file holder strips and drawer sides, had significantly split the wood. Rather than paying for the shipping for a replacement part, I removed the metal strip, super glued the wood, and replaced the metal strip. It worked and I hope it holds. A couple of the screws in a front drawer panel stripped the wood and do not hold. The same happened with one of the drawer knobs, and I had to replace the screw with a longer one. No reviews I had read, spoke of the fact that you cannot easily access the back of the drawers. There are about 5"-6" which I cannot use! This is perhaps the most frustrating of all the imperfections as I do need all the drawer space. Also the drawers do not move smoothly. It's only saving grace is that it is all wood and a beautiful looking piece of furniture! I cannot believe that is truly a $350.00 cabinet. With all the discounts I got it for $110.00. I don't think it is worth more.
Nice product, made well mostly of solid wood. Two stars off - thin plywood back, drawer bottoms, and assembly alignment issues.

This is a nice product, made very well in Vietnam, of plantation (rubber tree) wood, it seems.

One star off because there were alignment issues, one significant one, where the pieces would not match and join on the bottom crossbar. After some elbow grease and "jimmying", the tab finally went in the slot so the bolt fastener could be turned down.

One star off because this "Solid Wood" cabinet is actually mostly solid wood, tropical softwood similar to temperate pine furniture, stained to a nice cherry finish. The drawer bottoms and back of the cabinet are cheap, thin, plywood. I would not mind if they had used 4mm thickness, but this is only about 2mm thick - flimsy, and minimally functional.

The cabinet drawer slides take some time to get on the right track - that is why other reviews have complained about "sticky" drawers that are somewhat hard to close.

There is a small gap between the top and bottom drawer, good to allow circulation of air inside to reduce or prevent mildew forming inside.

Fix the quirks and this is a five star product.
