It works pretty well, but it isn't perfect
Amazon Reviewer✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 12, 2023
Yes, this scale does a pretty good job, but there are a few things you should know before buying, in case it makes a difference for you. We need a very accurate scale for medical reasons, because certain medications are stopped or started for one of the family members depending on changes in weight. What I didn't fully comprehend until I read one of the other reviews earlier today is that this scale has a feature that it will give you the LAST weight on the scale, as long as the current weight is within about 0.4 pounds of that LAST weight. All changes of approximately .4 pounds (about 5-7 ounces) are ignored by the scale! I just experimented with it by picking up various combinations of a shampoo bottle, a tube of toothpaste, and a 1 lb box of macaroni that I grabbed on the way to do the testing, while getting on and off the scale, and found that this is true.

I also expected that recalibrating the scale between tests would cause the scale to measure the NEW weight, but it DID NOT! (I.e., I got on the scale, got off and calibrated the scale, and got back on the scale holding a tube of toothpaste weighing about 4-5 oz., and still got the old weight instead of the .2 to .4 increase for the toothpaste). But at least now I understand why the readout for a weight taken at 6 a.m. has been exactly the same as the weight taken at 8 a.m. every day both weights were taken. Bodily functions in the meantime would typically change those weights at least 0.2 between different times of day, but now I'm wondering if the scale was just reporting the OLD weight and ignoring small changes.

Unless someone else regularly uses the same scale as you do, you'll need to take an extra step to get the most accurate weight. Get on the scale, and if you get the same weight as you last saw, test it by getting back off and picking up a full bottle of shampoo, conditioner or something else weighing 8 oz. or more before getting back on. That weight of the item should make the weight change. Then put the item back down before getting back on the scale. The last weight should be a little more accurate than the first weight (which is the old weight that the scale continues to give you if there are smaller weight fluctuations since the last time you weighed).

During my experiment, I found that, within a few minutes, my weight fluctuated up to 0.4 pounds (0.2 up and down from what is probably the closest to the "real" weight). That's less accurate than I'd hoped, but not so horrible that I will return the scale.

But, from now on, at our house, I will make sure that at least 2 people weigh themselves every day, so the scale will be re-set for the person whose weight is being monitored for medication adjustments. Otherwise, we might miss subtle changes.

Also be aware that if you don't stay on the scale until the weight flashes in the display, the weight resets to "0.0" as soon as you get off the scale. That can be a good thing, if someone is lurking around who you don't want to see your weight. But, if you can't see the display while you're standing on the scale, stay on it for about 6 seconds before getting off so the display will continue to show for a while after you get off.

For some reason, if you get back on the scale right after the display goes off, the scale may not measure anything. During my experimentation, I got a dark screen and no weights whatsoever 3 different times. I don't know what the magic amount of waiting time is, but when it happened to me, I simply pressed the top of the scale to recalibrate it and make the display show up again.

A few suggestions for other users: If you see "LO" in their display, try taking the batteries out and putting them back in again, making sure that each battery is fully upright and firmly pressed all the way into the battery cavity. We got a "LO" once, when I reinserted the batteries after moving the scale to a new building. I used a battery tester, which said the batteries were still good. That made me suspect a bad battery contact. I noticed that the springs that press the batteries up to the contact point on our scale were ever-so-slightly crooked, pushing the batteries a little to the left. When I made sure the batteries were fully upright and also firmly pressed all the way into the battery cavity, the "LO" disappeared and the scale worked again.

Also, although you aren't supposed to need to turn the scale "on" before you weigh, if you don't see the display when you first get on the scale, get back off and try pushing down on one of the two silver circles in the top corner of the scale. This is supposed to recalibrate the scale. After some rows of markings show on the display, you should see "0.0" and the scale should work. But keep in mind that, unless you have taken the batteries out during the move or someone else got on the scale in the meantime, the scale will still "remember" the prior weight instead of the current weight, unless the current weight has changed by approximately .0.4 pounds from the prior weight.
Good scale great customer service!

I am writing to update the review I left below. A day or so after I left that review a rep from the EatSmart company gave me a call at home. I had read of this happening and honestly it was one of the reasons that I went with this product in the first place, I felt like they must have great customer service if they would go so far as to call someone at home. Well I have to admit when they did call me I was a tad bit creeped out by it which was probably a little silly on my part. I guess in this day and age we just aren't used to this type of thing happening.

So the rep spoke to me about my review and asked me what type of floor I had in the bathroom where I was using the scale. I told him it was linoleum and very flat. He asked me take it out to my living room where I had wood floors and to try it out there for a few days to see if I thought it worked better out there. He mentioned that sometimes even though the linoleum seems like it's flat that it's still a bit cushy and might cause the scale to be off. Honestly I didn't think that was the case but I agreed to give it a shot. The rep was extremely friendly and helpful and told me that if I wasn't seeing a difference that they would be more than happy to ship me a new scale right away. He also mentioned that they are a small company and that product reviews on Amazon are very important to them and asked if I might edit my review if and when I ended up happy with the product which I agreed to do.

I was a little hesitant thinking that they might keep calling me to pester me about changing my negative review because I have read of other companies doing just that. However this company never contacted me again. Since the day I wrote my negative review I have been using the scale in my living room on my wood floor the way the rep suggested. And guess what, he was right! I've been dieting and have found this scale to be working very well and it seems to be very accurate. So all along I just didn't have it on a flat enough floor!

I've gone back and forth between giving this a four star review and a five star. My husband seems to think it's a little crazy to expect a person to not be able to use the scale on a linoleum floor. He figures that there are going to be plenty of people who don't have wood floors to use this on and that those people wouldn't get proper readings from the scale. I suppose he's right so because of this I knocked off one star. Frankly though I'm figuring that's going to be the case with any scale, not just this one.

I have purchased many scales at many price points over the years and have never had customer service like this. Honestly I don't think I've ever had a company other than Amazon follow up with me besides this company. For that reason alone I think if you are going to spend money on a scale that this one is a good choice. I also have the digital kitchen scale from this company and it has been phenomenal. I will continue to support this company and spread the word about them to anyone who might need this type of product. I think you really can't go wrong with this scale!

I purchased this scale in February of 2012 after reading about a million reviews of different scales on Amazon. Like many I was gung ho about starting a new eating plan and really wanted a scale that would be accurate and reliable. Well unfortunately my little healthy eating plan only lasted a couple of days so the scale wasn't used much. Since that Feb of 2012 my family has used this scale probably ten or twenty times at the most. From what we could tell it seemed like it was working fine.

Well now for the last month I've finally buckled down and am getting serious about getting my health and weight under control. Imagine my surprise when this scale gives me three or four different weights one right after another! One minute I weigh as much as five pounds more than I did standing in the same spot just moments before. (and by the way this is on a hard floor, no carpet or anything weird) Thinking maybe I was crazy I had my husband come in to have him try it. He told me not to bother with it and that he had meant to let me know that it had been acting up. He had thought it was the batteries and replaced them but that didn't help.

So here I am working hard to lose weight and get healthy and I have no flipping idea how much I weigh! Now I think about the handful of times we used it before, to weigh our kids for instance, and I wonder if it was ever accurate?

I wouldn't be so upset with this happening if the scale had been under heavy use during this year and a half or so that we've owned it but that isn't the case. As I mentioned before it's barely been used at all and this is just not acceptable to me. I thought I finally found a scale I could rely on but that is not the case with this one. So I'm off to attempt to find something that actually works.
consistently accurate

This is the most consistently accurate scale I've ever owned. We purchased a second scale to keep at our second home. I wanted the accuracy this scale provides in both places. Also the batteries last a very long time.
FINALLY -- a consistent scale!!!

When my old scale started giving wildly different readings every time I stepped on it recently I decided it was time to get a new scale. I was shocked to find that it is extremely difficult to get a digital scale that gives consistent readings these days. As someone who is trying to lose weight it is very frustrating not to be able to get consistent readings as you can't tell how you are doing since the scale might be wrong. The first scale I tried was the Weight Watchers scale. The reviews were mixed -- some said it was extremely accurate but just as many said it gave wildly different readings every time you stepped on it (variances of as much to 4 pounds!!!) I figured this was a Weight Watchers product and so it had to be accurate so I bought one. When I got it I stepped on it a few times and got totally different readings. In fact, it was next to impossible to get the same reading twice in a row. I liked the fact that the WW scale had body fat and bone mass readings so I returned the WW scale and ordered a Thinner scale that had the same functions. Well, it turned out it was pretty much the same scale as the WW one -- they were both made my ConAir even though they had different brand names. This scale only varied by a pound or two but it was still next to impossible to get the same reading twice. Totally frustrated, I went to Bed Bath & Beyond and tried out a bunch of different scales there. Most of them did not give consistent readings but one did. This one was made by HoMedics and it gave the same reading all 4 times I stepped on it at the store so I bought it and brought it home. I set it up and it gave consistent readings and I was happy for about two weeks until I got on my scale one morning and weighed a hundred pounds less than the night before!!! I figured maybe I had just been using it too much (I'm obsessed with my weight so I check it all the time) and that it just needed a new battery so I went out and got a new one and put it in. Guess what? The scale wouldn't even turn on! I checked the battery installation several times but I had it right and the scale was just plain dead. I returned and got my money back and then I went online in search of something reliable and I found the EatSmart scale. 99.9% of the reviews for this scale were positive and everyone said it gave consistent readings so I decided to order it. It came a few days later and I set it up and gave it a test run. Every single time I stepped on it I got the same reading. Then I drank some water and got on it again just to make sure it wasn't "remembering" my weight and I had gained .4 pounds. This scale has been totally consistent for the month I have had it and I have been able to track my weight loss effectively. A lot of people complained that the scale is hard to turn on and I had the same experience -- I definitely have to stomp on it a bit to get it to turn on but it's not that big of a deal and if that's what it takes to get consistent readings I'm willing to overlook that minor flaw. Another thing I like about this scale is that it uses AAA batteries rather than a Lithium cell. I had a heck of a time finding a replacement for my HoMedics scale when it died and the only place that had one was Radio Shack. I use AAA batteries for other things so I have them around and when my scale tells me it is low on batteries it'll be a quick task to change the batteries and get my scale working again. All in all this is a great product and the EatSmart team stands behind it -- this has a 2 year warranty and they monitor reviews on Amazon and encourage people to write their own reviews so that they know what needs improvement and so that consumers will spread the word about this great product. Buy this scale.... you won't be sorry.
was inconsistent but got a new one and it works!

I purchased this scale because I have been going to the gym a lot recently and have found that the scale they offer in the locker room is not the best quality. It is an OLD dr.'s office type scale with the bar you move the weight markers side to side on. The stem on it wiggles and wobbles and with hundreds of people on and off of it every day, I wasn't so sure it had even ever been calibrated, or how often it was.

I ordered the scale along with two other items (on two separate orders by the way) and noticed a tracking number email was sent to me for all three items in two different emails with the same tracking number. made me a little nervous, but normally never have a problem with anything from amazon and if i do they always make it right, so i thought nothing else of it. I did receive the package in the next few days and when i went to pick the box up it felt like it was going to crumble just from touching it. I thought that probably wasn't a good omen, but opened it up and it was in one piece and thought it might be okay. I was wrong. I read the instructions (which are very easy) to make sure it was calibrated, and we tried a 25lb weight on it. it read 24.8. okay well the review does say it is correct to within .2 lbs, and who knows if the weight we have is "exact". my fiance weighed himself. I weighed myself and we moved the scale to put it on the counter to take upstairs and all of a sudden the screen shows 4.6 with nothing on the scale. I thought it was a fluke. we 'recalibrated' and tried again... my weight was off by a whole pound that time. (in 10 minutes). i moved it upstairs to the bathroom and had the same 4.6 show up. the next day we recalibrated again and i weighed myself it showed a weight that was off by another pound from the night before when i got it. I didn't think much of it and went to the gym. i came home and figured i'd try again. this time it told me i was a full 2.5 lbs lighter... while i love the idea that i could drop weight like that... not the case. so i called and amazon said that i could return it, but because it is sold by a third party market that I would have to buy the same scale again for a replacement and just wait for the credit to show up on my account. understood. issued me a return label, dropped it off at UPS and ordered another.

got the second one... i got it and the same problem with this one... only this time it was showing 4.6 AND 4.8 at times when nothing was on the scale. I was starting to think it was something that should happen but didn't see any instances of this on the EatSmart website in the FAQ section. I weighed myself at night when i got it and it told me I was 2 lbs heavier than it told me i was previously with the last weigh of the other scale before i returned it. I weighed myself in the morning today... 2.3lb difference again... If it didn't seem to fluctuate so much between readings and seemed more consistent, maybe i could live with it, but when you are trying very hard to monitor yourself and get an accurate reading this scale just isn't working for me.

I got this one because of all the eatsmart scales it seemed to be accurate (per all the wonderful reviews) without the logo emblazoned on the front of it which i wasn't such a fan of, as well as the fact that it has between 4 and 5 stars with over 5,000 reviews. I REALLY wanted this one to work. I liked the design of it, it didn't look cheaply made, loved the easy to read display and the fact that there wasn't a logo on it, it wasn't too big etc. But after the two possible 'lemons' I just don't know if I can stomach trying to order again, and have it possibly show up like that for a third time and have to figure out how to find time to return a third. Really wanted this one to be 'it'.

very happy to hear so many good reviews for others though! wish i was able to get a working one of this guy. not sure if it was just being knocked around in shipment or what. better luck to everyone else who orders though!

***UPDATE!!!***:

about 20 minutes after writing this review I received a phone call from the vice president of EatSmart. He was fantastic! He explained to me that if the scale was on and it was picked up and put down that the scale would most likely show something around 4.7 because that is how much the scale weighs itself, but that there should be a C that shows up after it. When it turns of and you press on it again it should just show a 0.0lb. He explained also that it had to be on a flat surface, and I told him it definitely was because it was on our pergo flooring. unbeknownst to me, they sometimes measure inconsistently with pergo or vinyl/linoleum tiling because they are cushioned! those were the two surfaces that I was using it on. He went on to tell me that the 12" ceramic tiles you can get from home improvement stores can be placed under the scale for a more accurate reading. He wanted to trouble shoot with me when i was at home in front of the scale but i had already sent the first and second one back. He told me he would send out a new one to me, and even enclose a tile. ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?! what incredible customer service!!!!

I received my new scale yesterday and have used it a few times and it is MUCH more consistent!

Thank you EatSmart!!!! I can confidently say that I am totally satisfied with my new scale and have already told my friends about it, one friend who just bought one too!
