You can leave them plugged in forever and they are always charged.

We got two of these to use for harvest on our farm. The main reason we got them is that you can leave them plugged into a 12 volt outlet while you are using them. Most rechargeable radios don't last long enough on a charge for a farm day but these have made it through one harvest perfectly. We just left them in the tractors or combine all the time and they were always ready to go. The reception was ok, in the cabs we could get reception up to about a half mile.
Use this VHF instead of your cell phone.

I purchased this to get accustomed to Marine Band communications. Transmissions come across clear and crisp. The antenna unscrews, and presumably the unit could be connected to an antenna mounted on your boat via the appropriate cable. However, the instruction book does not appear to mention this.
I am not fond of the belt clip. The radio detaches from it when it is not supposed to, and vice versa.
This radio is especially good for listening to weather broadcasts on Channel 2.
Everyone who is out on the water should carry a VHF for safety, communication and weather. Don't rely on your cell phone. There is no guarantee that 911 operators can figure out exactly where you are.
Mixed feelings....

While it is a bit more complex to use than the venerable iCom IC-M36 that it replaces; it also has more features for about $10.00 more. Took a bit of use to get used to, but ok now. While those features are nice to have, the central reason I purchased this radio was the DSC distress calling feature which pretty much eliminates the "search" from "search and rescue." Once the radio, boat and user are registered (BoatUS is a handy way to go), pressing the red emergency button activates a digital signal to the Coasties providing boat's lat, long and description. It is reputed to work up to about 20 miles off shore. The digital signal has other user benefits as well. Postscript: After reading the negative reviews, had I been aware of the reliability and support issues, I probably would not have purchased this unit. Radio failure is not a good scenario.
Good for Sea Kayaking, but no wall charger

Good radio for the sea kayaker. Like most portable marine electronics, hard to find items that are affordable and reliable. My biggest gripe, which knocked off 2 stars, is that you have to use a cigarette lighter outlet to charge it. Don't have one on the kayak. Thought it had a wall charge adapter, but nope. I have to charge it in the car when I'm driving around. It does hold a charge for a long time. Channel options, scan option, weather button, volume, reception, battery life, transmission power are all great. The radio Dangles off my PFD. It gets banged when dropped it on the ground. I stick it in the tub with other gear to rinse off saltwater. The antennas gets snagged the I put the PFD on. The radio is rugged. Confident that when I need it most it will work. That's more important the hassle of charging it in the car. Not sure about how the battery will work in a couple years. Can't use standard batteries. I can foresee a couple problems with units that have standard replaceable batteries: (1) Unit may not be sufficiently waterproof when submerged for an extended period (2) The batteries could fall out, as happens with my portable fish finder display (3) battery life could shorten significantly. (4) battery monitor not as accurate or reliable.
Great radio, but really bad clip

I struggled whether or not to give this a 3 or a 4 star review, but I figured it's only right to err on the side of caution. The primary reason for docking the two stars is because the connection point attachment is not strong at all and finds itself becoming unclipped from my pfd at inopportune times. I am not sure what it is about the clip that makes it so weak, but it simply sucks. If you're planning on throwing this inside your boat cabin or using it in some other capacity other than clipped to something that moves then you are likely good. This radio works extremely well for what it's good at, being a radio. Unfortunately for me being a kayak fisherman I rely on the VHF to be attached to me at all times, remember this specific VHF does NOT float, so if it comes unclipped from you when/if you capsize you're in big trouble. I am still in the process of determining how I can attach this more semi permanently to my PFD to ensure I have it in the event of an emergency. Nevertheless the battery life is good, range is great in my testing, and I have no other complaints aside from the badly designed clip.
