Extremely tough drill bits

I purchased this three piece set of step drills for approximately $10 on 1/30/2017. I've used them a handful of times over the past 20 months drilling mild steel and haven't had any complaints. Fast forward to today, 8/20/2018, and I found out just how good these bits are. I repurposed an old bed frame and needed to drill 24 - 3/16" holes. Anyone who has ever worked with old bed frames knows how notoriously hard they are because of the high carbon content. I burned up 6 twist drill bits and only made 4 holes then I remembered these bits and gave them a try. They drilled 20 holes and are still sharp. So yes I can say for sure that these step bits are well worth the investment.
Total garbage - these are the definition of total garbage

Total garbage - these are the definition of total garbage!!
I bought these to have on hand because I lost the ones I had for nearly 20 years and when it came time to use them they would not even drill out 1/16 aluminum!!!! It just super heated the aluminum and when I finally cut through the cut looked sorta clean on one side but the other side had a huge wall of galled aluminum that I had to chip off. Again total junk, please do not waster your money.
All I Can Say Is Wow

This was amazing! As an occasional do-it-yourselfer, I have struggled to drill through a stainless steel sink before to install a water filter faucet. It was always a real chore. This time I only needed a half inch hole through the sink so I used the center bit of this set--the one with all the smaller incremental steps, the largest being a half inch. I used the bit itself to mark the spot with a slow few turns. Then I applied just a dab of coconut oil, started to drill, and within 15 seconds I was through the sink with my half inch hole neatly drilled. It went through almost like it was butter! To say I was surprised was an understatement, but I guess when you have the right tool for the right job, it just works.
Easily drilled through thick metal post

I purchased this bit to drill four holes in a 3/8" thick gate post, and it worked perfectly.

I needed four 3/4" holes in a thick post for driveway gate hinges. They are J-hinges with 3/4" bolts that go through the post.

To drill the holes, I placed painters tape on the post and marked where the holes should go on each side. I then used a spike and heavy hammer to punch a small indention into the metal. All of the drilling was done with a Ryobi cordless drill, which I had to recharge about half way through. I used a regular 1/8" drill bit to make an initial hole all the way through the metal (this was a regular black bit that had come as a starter set with my cordless drill). I then put this step bit in to widen the whole all the way to 3/4".

As for technique, I used a very very slow speed to essentially scrape away the metal. I used firm steady pressure. But did not use any kind of oil.
More then worth the money!

So far so good! Most reviews here seem to be pretty easy on them. Well I have not been easy on them. They will go threw 1/4" steel they will go threw 3/8" steel and then i pushed them threw 1/2" steel! They are still cutting good after doing this more then once. Clearly going threw that thick you will have steps in the hole unless you needed the hole the largest on the bit which i did! They will start with no hole but it is a bit faster to run a small drill bit first. The key is go slow and keep the heat down! 1/2" steel is not what they was meant for but if you don't over heat them or go to fast you are fine!
