My 7 year old bought this for herself. The instructions were difficult to follow if you aren't already a knitter. I had to go online to watch a few youtube videos in order to figure it out. After watching two videos, and practicing myself, I was ready to show her how to cast on and do a simple garter stitch. Looking at the instructions now after knitting for the past few months, they make perfect sense. I liked the size of the needles as they fit in her little hands. I also love that two sets of needles come with the set. She have one set to her cousin and we taught her. However, to garner endless hours of fun, the little knitter this is intended for needs to have an adult who already knits in their life or an adult willing and motivated to learn to show them and work with them.
