My wife rides a number of unpacked or semi paved paths and her bike chain gets dirty pretty quickly. Sometimes I'll remove it and throw it in an ultrasonic cleaner, but usually I just hang her bike on a repair stand and use one of these chain cleaners "” this one, or a Park Tool Cyclone "” to do a quick job. With a solution like Finish Line's citrus chain degreaser, or Park Tool's Chainbrite, you can get a pretty good result. Be sure to put some newspaper down ahead of time, and wear latex gloves, because it'll get messy. Usually I use the chain cleaner, then wipe the chain down with shop towels, then apply chain lube. FWIW, I like to use a nickel plated chain where possible because those gray chains hide dirt. With a shiny silver chain it's a lot easier to see when it needs cleaning.

Forget the ones that are $10/$15/$20 more. When the bristles separate and stop being really effective (and they allll do), the tool needs replacing. But the one that lasts just as long as the others, does exactly the same thing, is just as easy to use - and costs half. This one.

The simple design of the Finish Line bike chain cleaner makes cleaning the chain fast and easy. The included chain cleaner fluid provided a great cleaning on the first run-through. Wipe down the chain, apply fresh lube and empty out the chain cleaner, and wipe dry. The whole process took 15 minutes. The simplest method and the quickest I have tried. This should be in everyone's bike maintenance toolbox.
