Great pickup, great company!
Mannwolf•October 27, 2015
Great product, very well made. Had some tech issues with installation - I wrote Schatten and the engineer who designed this pickup responded and helped solve my problem. The pickup sounds excellent with an appropriate preamp as suggested in the installation manual. These types of pickups can be very bright in the highs, I'd recommend a pre with tonal controls for maximum flexibility. I'd certainly recommend it and Schatten to anyone looking for this type of device.
Accurate sound with a little EQ

I ordered this pickup for a Regal Tricone. I just wanted a passive pickup because I already have an outboard preamp. Installation was straightforward and took about 45 minutes with the provided instructions (soldering is required).
Out of the box the sound was dominated by the low end, but I added a Boss GE-7 pedal and within a few minutes was able to dial in a very accurate tone -- more accurate than I expected from a pickup, actually. I cut a lot of low end and a little high end, so I probably could have done it with a single band of parametric EQ and possibly with preset hi/mid/low knobs on a mixing board. In my case the pedal is nice because I can switch it off when changing to a different guitar.
The pickup is a little hotter than my other acoustic guitars -- not surprising since the resonator itself is louder -- so another benefit to the pedal is that I can use the level fader to balance the volumes.
I sent a few questions to Schatten Design and received friendly and helpful replies. I'd recommend this product as long as you have an EQ adjustment option in your setup.
