Great workbench package for the casual DIYer
golfdude42501✓ Verified PurchaseAugust 15, 2017
I purchased this 2X4 Basics workbench and shelving to make my life easier for some of my hobbies in the basement. I reload ammunition, build models and work on items around the house. This was very easy to put together. I'm not by any means a carpenter or woodworker, but after some shaming from my brother who is much better at building and working on things, I thought I would give this package a try.

Sure, you could skip the hard plastic legs and shelflinks and just use wood for everything, but I liked how it looked and the only tool I had to buy was a circular saw to cut the 2X4s to length and the plywood to size. Two hours of work, measuring everything to size twice, screwing everything together was so easy. The wood cost $200, partly because I chose a plywood that was already sanded with a great top surface. Costs, including the 2X4 Basics and wood was about $250. I could have used some help when putting the two long sides together with the two bottom shelves in place due to weight, but I was able to get everything together myself.

I recommend this package for casual DIYers. I plan on lightly sanding some of the edges and then staining and applying polyurethane to protect the surface.
Good Sturdy System - Very Satisfied

I have built several workbenches over the years. In this case, I needed a bench constructed quickly, and I had a limited number of tools available to me, This system worked out great. I had a cordless screwdriver and a box of drywall screws at my disposal, and that was all I needed. I did modify my design to include a pegboard tool holder instead of two shelves, and I left the center shelf on the bottom portion out as well (used 2x4's on sides and rear only for middle section). My daughter was so impressed she ordered a second system so I could build the same bench for her husband. This design doesn't really save money because of the lumber that must be purchased separately, but it is a huge time saver and a sturdy setup once the bench is completed. I'm well satisfied.
great concept, great product makes a great work bench in my case

Great concept, simple to put together and some many ways you can put it together and use it. I used it to build a very solid work bench in my garage and while I could have bought 4*4 for the legs this just was easier and made the workbench easier to build and leveler. Was amazed at how fast it went together. Also had enough extra to make another shelf and then used extra 2*4 to make more shelfs

actually this is an update. on 7/8/17
I liked the first one so much I bought a second one. to build.
I used peg board as a back on both of them and on 1 I wanted to be able to sit down somewhat at so I didn't run a front 2 by 4 across at my feet but back 1 foot. I used the top as a guide as I had it cut at home depot.
I also used led lights from amazon to light up the work benches I installed them on under the upper shelves. Lastly I used a Belkin 12 plug in, 12 foot cord switch to use to plug in all tools etc. I already had them but they came from amazon originally. It worked out really nice.
I did use 3/4 birch plywood for the top of the bench and 1/2 birch plywood for the rest of the bench and then stained it and am sealing it with several coats of sanded poly so its nice and glossy with a very hard thick finish.
Neat and easy to assemble

I am very happy with this product, it arrived within a few days of ordering with all parts intact. The legs are very solid and help to keep everything square while assembling. I made my bench 8' long by 32" deep and used 9. 2X4s, 2. sheets of 1/2" plywood (construction grade) for the bottom 2 shelves and 1 sheet of a better quality 3/4" birch plywood for the top shelf. The total cost of lumber for me was $139.00. I DID NOT use the shelving units because I wanted more room for assembling projects, so all of the lumber I purchased was for the bench alone. This kit does not come with any screws to fasten the shelves, so plan on picking up some of those too if you intend to fasten them. I didn't fasten the bottom 2 shelves but will be fastening the top. In hindsight I wish I had used pocket screws to fasten the top before assembling, not too late for me to do that but it's just gonna be more of a pain now. I've seen some poor reviews for this product because people said they didn't receive the lumber in the kit.....Honestly I don't know how anyone would think that for this price you would get lumber too. The price does seem to fluctuate a lot, it dropped by $5 a couple days after I purchased it.
Great all-purpose work table.

I am not reveiwing the upper shelf unit, which I didn't want. However, the table itself is pretty good. The instructions are fairly clear, but I temporarily attached a 2x4 leg at each end, to hold the lower shelving until I placed the permanent legs. Also, I substituted 2x12 planks for the table top. I've had poor experience with plywood splintering and delaminating when subjected to repeated blows. Other than that, I'm very pleased with the resulting table. At 3'x7', it is massively solid, yet (barely) light enough that I can muscle it around the garage floor. The 2x4s cost about $2 per linear foot, for Doug Fir #2. The two sheets of 3/4" plywood (CDX) cost me about $40 each. The 2x12s for the top added another $120, so I have about $375 of lumber added to the cost of the kit. I didn't use any finish - it's a work table, for sawing, drilling, painting, and lots and lots of hammering, lol.
