Starts a fire just fine, I did find the tinder wasn't as nice as I liked but it did a good job as a heat booster. I got the best results with just a cotton ball or a dryer lint with just a tiny bit of Vaseline spread in it, (ie save some drier lint put it and a smidge of Vaseline in a baggie and store that in your emergency /camping gear. The tinder dust helped get some damp twigs burning.

the firesteel is little, but that's not important to me. I bought this set mainly because I wanted the amazing striker off of it, like most Swedish firesteels. ive also been having some interest in fatwoods as tinder recently, after finding a couple pieces in a local lumberyard. although the shavings do light, they don't work as well as some of the finer shavings I make with just the striker from a basic firesteel. they also do not burn with as much ferocity or dark smoke as the other fatwood I have. im probably just going to use this one time and then keep the tin for something else.
