Bad and Good...
JH•July 24, 2017
Well, first off, I opened the outer bag and noticed that the little pipette had pierced its little inner bag, and there was sand inside the pipette. So much for the hope of sterile equipment...:(
Then I noticed a pretty strong petroleum odor. I wondered if that's what makes the sand hydrophobic, oil. Anyway, I worried the kitty would not like the odor. Luckily, this kitty is not too fussy when it comes to litter, and she used it. But I didn't get to the scene immediately, kitty tried to cover the pee, and some of the very fine sand particles were floating in and within the urine.
I carried on anyway and sucked up the pee in the pipette that I had previously tried to wash, and filled the tube provided. Then I couldn't get the little stopper/plug to properly fit in the tube. I worried if I pushed any harder, the tube would break and I'd have a bigger mess. So, did the best I could with the stopper (it was crooked) and placed the tube into a little mason jar that I had sterilized (at least something was sterile) in case the stopper leaked.
I gave the product two stars rather than one, as kitty's doctor did not have any complaints about the sample.
Oh, and as per some reviewers who washed the sand afterwards as a cost-saving effort... ...I tried this, and it was a horrible mess and a waste of time. I would just recommend to folks to plan to use the litter once, and then dispose.
All that said, I still prefer this type of urine collection to the veterinarians long, painful needle, and I will continue to use this, or a similar product rather than subject kitty to the pain and trauma of the needle.

Too Little Sand, Defective

This soaked up the litter. I think if you collect it right after the cat urinates, maybe it works. But, I have a multi-cat household. This means I have to put the selected cat in a room with her own litter box for the day. She peed sometime while I was at work and by the time I got home to collect it, her urine had absorbed into this and litter. The only saving grace is that I had mixed this sand litter with some plastic bean bag pellets because the sand litter wasn't enough to fill the litter box. Where the urine hit the plastic pellets, there were puddles of urine that I was able to collect. So, skip this. Buy some plastic bean bag pellets (craft section). This bag wasn't enough to fill the litter box anyway. Way too much money for a incomplete defective product.
Worked well for my cat, but pipette/vial missing

Overall the sand worked well for the urine collection. My cat was a little weirded out but still used it. I just hung out with my cat for a lot of the night and watched him and waited, and then immediately collected the urine. The sand repelled the urine well and it was easy to collect.
Downsides - too expensive, and if your cat is finicky, you should buy two bags to make the litter deeper and more like their normal box (making the total cost $30 for one urine collection - however, this is worth it to me as getting a procedure done at the vet to collect urine from the bladder is more expensive.) There does seem to be a problem with quality control, however, as I've read on several other reviews that their bag did not contain the pipette/vial. I bought two packages of this (after reading that 1 barely covers the bottom of a standard litter box.) One contained the pipette/vial, one did not. I specifically read the back of the packaging because it occurred to me that maybe there was not one included, but the bag clearly states that the equipment is there. I didn't want to open it prior to using it because it's in a sterile bag and didn't want to contaminate it, but it's a VERY good thing I bought two bags and that one had the collection vial as my vet appointment was the next day and I didn't have time to run out and buy the equipment.
I wrote to Amazon and explained I could not return the product because I had already poured the litter out of the bag into my cat's litter box, and they happily refunded my money for the one bag that did not contain the vial and also offered to waive shipping if I wanted to overnight a new bag. Thanks Amazon!

Surprisingly worth the price! Though one could probably make it themselves…

Is this stuff even kidding me?? I had to write a review because I honestly was a little annoyed with how little sand there was in the bag for the sixteen dollars that I paid for it. But the stuff was a godsend for me so I feel I owe it to the world to write about my experience.
So the bag of sand arrived the other day and it was not much bigger than my hand. Along with that I also bought a small litter pan here on Amazon for less than three dollars, and the litter in this bag barely covered the bottom of the pan. But it DID cover it.
I got some nice squishy warm blankets, kitty's food and water, and the litter pan with sand...and set my little bathroom up like a teeny tiny little loft apartment. Then shut her in there after a short petting and introduction to her space. She was not happy. There was some serious initial vocal display of indignation along with an impressive show of paw strength yanking from underneath the door but that only lasted a few minutes. I guess it was good timing -- I woke her up from a deep slumber to put her in there, in the hopes that her bladder would already be somewhat full -- because after a couple moments of silence I heard the familiar litter scratching sound and then more meowing by the door. Sure enough, when I peeked in, I saw a sufficient amount of cat pee just sitting on top of the litter! The little pipette syringe thingy and collection test tube that came with the litter, came in very handy. I definitely would've paid a few dollars extra for those parts so I can mentally remove that from the price of the sand and now I feel like the whole thing was well worth the sixteen bucks.
Anyway, I will not hesitate to recommend this stuff to anyone I know with a cat! I do want to add that the product itself seems to be no different then that kids' play magic sand stuff, and my guess is you could technically find recipes online to make your own -- a whole lot more sand for a whole lot less. Since I hope to only need this amount, I'm glad I just took the easy route and bought it... But if someone needed much larger amounts, for multiple cats or reoccurring issues, it might be worth checking out. That Steve Spangler will help you make anything ;-)

"Purr"fect
S. Cope•July 21, 2016
I have 10 cats and two of them have UTI's. Instead of running to the vet to get the "pearls" they sell at an outrageous price, I found this urine collection system. After the first use, I bought more to keep on hand so when I think one of my kids is having a problem I can get a specimen and take it to the vet without any fuss or added vet costs. The specimen tube they supply gives me trouble as I can never get the top on it, so I bought specimen cups with screw on lids. My cats have no trouble using this. I put them in a quiet room with the door closed and plenty of fresh water. It is simple and no un-necessary trauma to my cats. The sand does not cover the bottom of a standard litter pan, but it isn't an issue for my cats.
