Very nice, dark denim!

Just what I wanted! I have a very thick, heavy futon and wanted something in extremely dark blue fabric that would hold up well-- I have a bad back and often sleep on my futon couch if my back is bothering me. When I got this, I was surprised by how dark it was but pretty pleased; I put it through the wash right away, and it lost the top layer of dye (not uncommon, there's usually a kind of peripheral layer left on the very outside of fabric), temporarily dying my washer blue. After it dried, though, the cover didn't shed any dye onto surfaces that touched it, and it fit my thick futon perfectly. I like this cover so much I may order a second one to swap out when I wash this one; seriously, it's worth it.
Theses are very blue

I washed these before putting them on the futon and they were still VERY dark almost black. They fit but it is awkward to bag a mattress so you will handle it a lot by the time you're done. I put the mattress back on the futon and sat down. It felt OK, but my hands looked like I had been working on the car. From all the dye they picked up. It washed off but needed to scrub to get it all. The washer and dryer have a blue tint that doesn't want to go away. It doesn't seem to transfer to other clothes either, so I'm watching it fade slowly in the washer. I do have 2 futons so I washed the other one 5 or 6 times before installing it. It looks blue and my hands looked better so I washed the other one a few times to get it to match. They are made well and hold up. The fit is decent and aside from the bulkinesscsf a mattress they are easy to install.

I am thrilled with this futon cover. As others have written, the material is substantial. I didn't have a problem with treads coming loose in the washer or dryer.
After the initial wash and dry, I lightly dampened the fabric with water and then used a "rag roller" from the paint store to roll undiluted bleach onto the fabric. After about 5 minutes the now "mottled" fabric was as light as I wanted. It was then plunged into a pre-prepared bathtub full of water and a little detergent. Laundry detergent counteracts bleach [that's why you shouldn't use them at the same time in your washer!] The idea here is to halt the bleaching of the fabric. After a rinse, I placed the futon cover back in the washer for the final wash and dry.
This was a fun project, and we now have a unique cover. Liked it so much that we bought matching denim fabric to reupholster the dining room chairs. Discount Designer Fabrics...#C044
NOTES: If you do this technique, use vinyl gloves and eye protection. I experimented on a pair of $5 jeans from the thrift store. Have your rinse bath ready to dunk the fabric before you begin bleaching. Be sure to dampen the fabric--using the washer to wet and then spin the cover works well. Be mindful of WHERE you bleach--I used the clean concrete driveway. Roll out the excess bleach from rag roller before applying to the fabric--no drips. Vary your directions as you roll. Viola! Your own unique cover!

The good, the bad & ugly

The media could not be loaded. I washed this right away as recommended by a reviewer. After it came out of the dryer, there's no need to iron it. Perfect fit. Nice denim material. I think it will be durable enough for our Golden Retriever. That's the "good". Now for the "bad & ugly". Like some reviewers noted, the trim inside is sloppy & messy. Refer to vid clip (for some reason nothing happened when I clicked on "Add a Photo" so I had to make a vid instead). There's no way this product gets 5 stars because of this trim. However, I still give it an overall thumbs up because the material seems like it will hold up well for a long time. The messy trim isn't visible on the outside anyway (and the futon's in the basement) so I just have to be extra careful when using the zipper.
Well Constructed

Its a little bit stretchy, but not as much as some reviews led me to believe. Also thicker than I expected. I was replacing a high quality indigo denim cover by SIS, our go to futon cover for 20 years, which has been discontinued. The zipper feels strong, we did not have issues with loose threads catching in it. It is dark, dark denim. I'm hoping that will mellow with washing, but we've not washed it yet. To the touch it feels like a good pair of stretchy jeans, but doesn't stretch quite as much. We have a 6 inch futon mattress with a 2 inch foam mattress pad on top and I was able to, with a little effort, get everything to fit in smoothly. If you're a futon person you know the wrestle, but it wasn't excessive.
