I needed to replace FOUR sets of spiral tension balances for tilt windows. I'm glad I treated myself to this "deluxe" version of the tensioning tool. Worked like a charm. Perfect fit -- no tip modifications required. Truth be told, if you're really good with your hands, a long nose plier and a second plier will do the job IF you're replacing one or two balances AND don't need to torque up the tension much. Helpful tip regardless of tool: Slide the shoe to only six inches from the bottom of the tube and have the spiral rod fully retracted (i.e. up). Attach the tool, then extend the rod a few inches and twist clockwise for metal housing tubes. My 28" blue tipped balances required only two twists for my 29hx27w double-pane window for the smoothest movement. YMMV -- If the window is too hard to close, reduce the tension; if it slides downward on its own, increase the tension. May require trial and error, but that's not a hassle when using this higher-end model tool. Be sure to replace balances in pairs for even tension and for balance longevity.

several windows in my home were very hard to lift and lower even after cleaning and lubricating the pivot shoes and where they ride as well as the spiral balance. Gave the balance three twists each and the windows open like new again.
Easy to use. only thing I did was keep a finger over the hook to insure that the balance spiral would not come out of the hook as I saw it happen on a video. I originally tried vice grips this was soooo much easier.
Would recommend and buy again.

Good quality

I was tasked with fixing a handful of older double hung windows which would not stay open. Turned out all needed new spiral balance rods. This tool made it really easy to grab, wind and insert these.
Yeah, one could probably manage this job with needle nose pliers, but not without a lot of wasted time and... swearing.
There are other similar tools for less money, but this looked, and was, more comfortable to use. Probably last me a lifetime, so why not spend a tick extra.
