great for all temps of cooking
Mike RobbinsSeptember 24, 2017
For my $, this stove is worth every penny of the price. As has been stated so many times, great for all temps of cooking, but really excels when high temps are desired. While butane stoves are used indoors everyday around the world, I do turn on the stove top hood vent when using (just to be extra safe). Living in a hurricane prone area, this is the plan for backup cooking also. Oh, is also great when cooking a large meal the requires several burners, or more than one person is cooking at the same time.

I probably should have purchased the IWATANI CB-WA-35 MIYABI model for roughly the same price. I use my stove indoors in my home because I don't own a gas range. Therefore, I don't need a wind guard. The wind guard probably makes it a little more difficult to clean. The wind guard probably also blocks some oxygen from reaching the flame and may limit the diameter of the pot or pan you can use with the stove. The WATANI CB-WA-35 MIYABI looks a lot sleeker and more presentable in a home setting.

This is a very well-constructed highly functional burner that does the job any stove top burner can accomplish.

The one issue I have with this product is the difficulty adjusting the flame. This might be a problem inherent with all portable stoves in this price category. When I try to adjust the knob a tiny fraction upwards, the flame often becomes too low. When I try to adjust it a tiny faction downwards, the flame often becomes too large and too hot. The knob should have a better gearing ratio so that more movement is needed. Now the knob is way too sensitive.

I really have to fidget with the knob a long time before I get the right flame for pancakes because the slightest distance changes the flame from high to low. You can't really use the indicators on the front of the range to tell how high your flame is because

1) as the canister empties there is less pressure inside the canister and the opening must be larger to achieve the same level flame. This is a law of physics. The solution to this problem would be the inclusion of a gas regulator which could double the price of the unit.

2) The change between a high and a low flame is only one notch on the indicator. There is a great deal of play in the knob. You can feel the knob is loose and must move an entire notch (more or less) before it actually engages. Then when the knob does meet resistance and does engage, the slightest knob movement greatly influences the size of the flame.

The tiniest, lightest tap on the knob that barely moves the knob up or down greatly affects flame size. This can be very frustrating, This is normally not a problem from me since I almost always cook at the highest, blazing-hot setting. It is only when I need to turn the flame down that this becomes an issue.

3. I ruined a couple of very expensive Teflon pots by using too much heat. This was obviously my fault. The color of the Teflon changed before I could do anything. The color change in the Teflon indicates that the Teflon has undergone a chemical change and has been permanently damaged.

There are times when I am cooking on high heat and most of the water in the food I am cooking has evaporated that my frying surface starts heating up too fast. When this happens, I have to turn the gas off, stand back, and toss some water into the pan to cool it down to prevent the oil from burning, the pot from warping or otherwise getting destroyed by the high heat.

My solution should might be to only use cast iron pots and peanut oil. Peanut oil has the highest smoke point and is stable to the highest temperatures, But I normally only cook with the most expensive extra virgin olive oil. This is probably a waste of extra fine EVOO.

I just read about their magnetic locking system. I didn't realize it had this feature. But now that they mention it, I realize that it makes it very easy to replace spent containers and ensure the correct alignment of the new container. When placing a new container in the unit, I now realize some magnet must cause it to snap into the the correct position creating a positive seal. With other products you might never be sure that you really have a good seal. Because of the way the gas cans snap into place, with this unit there is never a question if the can is in the right position and a perfect seal has been created.
Great Burner!

Very light weight, this was a great alternative to a conventional gas burner for my circumstances. Simple straight forward construction, the burner grate is easily removed for cleaning. Even when the burner is on "high" the bottom of the burner, or the surface that it sits on, remains only warm so it should be safe for table tops and counter tops. I have used one bottle of butane in it, and it seems to cook longer than a comparable 1 pound propane bottle would in a conventional propane burner. Comes with a plastic carrying case that may have issues of longevity as the plastic latches may fail over time. However, I am not writing the review based on the carrying case, just the burner.

I ordered a different portable burner from a thermal cooker company, yes it was a 3rd of the price and after ordering this one I see why. Iwatani has a hotter BTU and a heavier duty unit. In addition the carrying case is also more durable. I have a glass cooktop that takes for ever to boil so when it is pasta time I whip this bad boy out for fast service.
Cost effective, awesome performance

We've been living a remodeling nightmare (don't ask) for over a year now and this burner has been a lifesaver. I'm used to cooking with gas and I hated the electric hotplate I used for a while. This stove is the bomb. I use it mostly with a 12 inch deep sautée pan which it heats rapidly and evenly. I use it to prepare both breakfast and supper 5-6 times a week and each butane canister lasts about 10-14 days. I highly recommend this product.
