Red Star Active Dry Yeast
WalleyeJanuary 12, 2018
I have over 30 years experience using a bread machine. I make all of my own bread and pizza dough several times a week. For many years, I used the individual packets of instant or rapid rise yeast. It was convenient but relatively expensive. I have now purchased this 2 lb. package of Red Star yeast multiple times. This may seem like a lot of yeast but buying the large quantity of Red Star is very cost effective and it stores well in the freezer or refrigerator. There seems to be some inaccurate information out there about what type of yeast will work in a bread machine. I use the minimum amount of this yeast and it always works exactly like it should. I simply add it with the other ingredients and there isn't any need to pre-mix it with liquid or "proof" before using it in a bread machine. In fact, this yeast works just as well if not better than any other yeast that I have ever used in my bread machines and I highly recommend it. I always get extremely consistent loaves of bread. It also makes excellent pizza dough every time.
Consistently good product

Cons:
Consistently good product. Fresh.
It holds well for a long time if stored in an airtight container. I prefer glass containers.
Worked excellent In my baked recipes (2 1/4 teaspoons = a packet of yeast)

Cons:
None
Highly recommended.

Our plumber recommended to use two table spoons in each sink and toilet once a month! He personally uses it regularly. He has had no problem with his septic tank. We followed his advise. Will let you know in the long run. Have heard same from several people. We have septic tank as well. Apparently the bacterial growth helps to digest all the waste materials. Hence one does not have to spend $$$$ to pump out the waste - ever!!
Great buy - yeast.

I am now diabetic 2 and stopped sugar but had to also stop eating regular bread. Regular wheat flour is worse than sugar. Took 2 years of trying but finally have made decent low carb bread - less than 4 or 5 g carbs/slice. I keep weird bread flours (vital wheat gluten, soy, flax, etc.) in freezer or frig. Need to warm up all including the yeast before I then proof the yeast before mixing the flours. I go through a lot of yeast. 2 pounds is a great buy - so much cheaper than the small jars. I have 2 of qt size mason jars filled with yeast in the freezer, and the rest in smaller jars in freezer and frig. I use the one in the frig and refill later. Wish I had known of this size earlier.

I found a bag of this after my mom told me we had some after I purchased it, it was made in 2001 and said best by 2003 but was in the freezer, the yeast is still active today!
