I used to love it...what happened?!

To be quite honest, I do not know what this product is traditionally used for. I personally use it to make chalk paint. The first time I purchased this exact product, I loved it. It was super thick and produced awesome chalk paint results. This time I was actually very disappointed. They had changed their packaging and the product seemed different as well. It yielded results that were significantly more watery than before (and it was the only variable in my chalk paint making equation). I don't know what happened!
Decent Product

This was everything I was looking for: plain powdered calcium carbonate. A tiny pinch of this will quickly take down the acidity of an overly strong (or overly cheap) cup of coffee. Unlike sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), it won't make your food/beverage taste salty or increase the sodium content. It may also be beneficial for people who need more calcium in their diet. I have also been using it to bolster my dental care regimen.
My only complaint is something that other reviewers have mentioned. There were some tiny holes in the bag when I got it. They were too small to easily see, but there was some residue in the package and handling the bag caused more to slip out. It is a fine powder and easily gets into things. Since the bag is not resealable anyway, I simply cut it open and poured it into a clean and appropriately sized jar with a good lid. I use a clean, dry spoon to edge out a pinch whenever I need it. I imagine this lasting for a very long time.

I used this in a chalk paint recipe. It was 3 parts paint and one part Calcium carbonate. It was awful. But the more I thought about it, I realized what I did wrong....
1. I didnt mix in the CC in slowly. I believe that this is why i had little clumps, I just dumped it in. You should do it a tiny bit at a time much like you are baking.
2. I needed to add water. This is especially true if you use very high quality paint. I used Valspar Reserve flat exterior. (found in the mistint section at lowes: $9 instead of $40) I had to add at least one part water but im not sure what it exactly was because i just added it slowly till it was the right consistency.
3. I made too much paint!!! I made like 3 quarts and could paint about every piece of furniture I own with that amount....thus wasting more of the CC than I should have.
With that said even with my rookie mistakes it is way cheaper to mix your own chalk paint. I will be purchasing more of the CC next time I want to mix some up.
