I really like this scale. It's the first balance beam scale I've owned, but I don't know how I got by all these years without one.
I receive the scale in short order, well packed and in good shape. It was HEAVY in the box and I had reservations when I opened it, saw that it was in two pieces, and had "some assembly required." But, turned out to be no problem. The thing went together very easily, and only after I was finished did I look at the directions.
Was I ever glad as they were a nightmare just to read and make any sense of. To make a long story longer, there are two pieces that need to be joined - the weight platform and the vertical piece that holds the balance bar/weights. They join together with four studs that pass through predrilled holes in the platform, and are secured with four nuts/washers. There is a hook that connects the weight platform to the balance bar that has to be connected around a fixture on the bottom of the platform. I tried to do it with my fingers, but ended up doing it easily with a pair of pliers.
After that little exercise, I set it upright, put the weights to zero, saw that it was ready to go without any adjustment, and it's been giving good service since. I highly recommend this scale.
