I only give this 3stars because the cover always falls off its not made well. But on the flip side my son LOVES this compass. It's just frustrating to keep having to fix the cover and occasionally the cover get misplaced& my son get worked up over that.

This was purchased for two of my 5 year old grandsons for Christmas. I was pleased with my purchase and the boys were excited to receive. Their parents have advised me (weather permitting) the boys play with the National Geographic Explorer Series items almost daily. National Geographic products have provided hours of fun. Excellent purchase!

My review is simple. This is a product made for children. It is not an expensive top of the line compass. This product did what it was supposed to do, appears to be very durable and is educational. I kept hearing all this whistle blowing only to find out that my 7 year old grandson was practicing his "Morse Code". The Uncle Milton Explorer set is really a well designed exploration kit for kids!
Doesn't work
R. Webb•December 28, 2014
Not for a smart kid. Bought for my 5 yr old nephew and within a few mins he noticed the compass wasn't right. He knew north and the compass was def off. Whistle worked, mirror wouldn't stay on well. Because it wasn't correct he wasn't interested, the 3 yr old played with it because of the whistle. Great thought behind the toy but if you are going to go thru the trouble of making a compass for a kid make it work!
great

these were great gifts for my boys this year - my only "small" complaint is that the mirror door tends to just fall off while they're using them. It snaps right back on, but it's annoying. They've finally just left them off altogether. Still glad I bought it.
