Good Idea, Bad Reality

I was very excited to try this planter, hoping I could save alot of space and still grow many plants but did not work well.
Great idea but all the water drains from the top 3 tiers, leaving them bone dry everyday.
The lower two are always very wet, the lowest level constantly grows mold.
As nice as it is to grow so many plants in a small space I will be using regular planters instead of this tower.

It is a great space saver and I'm using them to grow pineberries and strawberries. The only issue I had with the stack was keeping track of what was water and if everything was watered evenly. So I created my own solution to water using Mr Stacky and a few irrigation parts from Home Depot.

I really like this planter. The idea of having different flowers is great because I don't like the clutter of many flower pots...although some extra pots are necessary. I made a little adjustment in that I found out I can reduce the soil intake and weight in the middle by tapering the corners by using a piece of plastic (I cut up a plastic cutting board) and simply curved it. I didn't push it all the way down so the plants can drain well and left a small amount of dirt in the middle area. I will not do it with the very top one since that will be filled completely in. Im sure once the plants fill out it will look great.

I bought this as a gift for my mom and purchased some lettuces and her favorite herbs to grow for Mother's Day. I can't say enough good things about this attractive herb tower. It stacks inside each other for easy storage and it's customizable to how many tiers you want. I attached some pictures so you can see what it looks like. I only planted everything on Sunday. I'm curious as to how well it will hold up. I like that my mom can put it on casters and bring it in the house for the winter.
