Caveat Emptor
KTG•June 13, 2017
Disappointing. Did not work. I have two units exactly like this one I've been using for a couple of years without issue. Exactly the same model number. So when my third Tivo, an older Series 3 quit, I purchased this as a replacement. It would not recognize the cable card from the Series 3. After much diagnosis and effort, I called the cable company and gave them the error message. They said that meant the cable card was bad, and to come in and swap it out. I did, and I also was issued 3 cable cards in case the first one didn't work. None of the three worked, all ending in the same error, and the unit would not recognize a card had been inserted. I powered down one of my working units and removed the card from it. I inserted it into the new Tivo unit, and it refused to recognize it either. I then placed one of the 'new' cards into the existing Tivo unit, and it recognized it immediately. The cable company had already provisioned the 3 cards they issued to me this afternoon, so it worked as soon as the boot cycle finished. I do like this model, and am very satisfied with the two I already have. They have given excellent service. This one is packed up to return though, and I've already gone out to the Tivo site and purchased a new Bolt. At twice the price of this one. It happens, and I am very appreciative of the Amazon return policy making this such a smooth transaction. I wish I had my afternoon back though.
4 input steams plus internet links good news!

I got tired of only two input streams when I needed 3 or 4. The good stuff all piles up at the same time in the evening. So Roameo works fine for this, but the learning curve was pretty steep. It collects many different episodes when I selected only one, so I spend some time deleting shows I didn't want saved: a two step process. I had to buy an HDMI splitter because there is only one output on this box - and boy that was almost a deal killer! I don't want to have to fire up the projector so I've got a 27" lcd display, too. It also records stuff I didn't ask for, and sometimes I am glad it did, but usually not. Too bad moving ahead slides across the content instead of jumping like I was used to on Comcast. The controller is symmetric so I often start running inverted and fast rewind instead of fast forward, etc.
I am sure that I am only using a small portion of what this is capable of, and it is better than what I had so I won't go back. Having the output radio controlled is handy.
TiVo is quite useable. All the features are as advertised. I like that.
Sometimes I get the end of a show cut off, just at the climax. Is it the cable company or the provider which delays that show? It doesn't matter. Every program has signals that communicate with other devices which carry that program. Can't the Tivo engineers read that information? When I have to add 3 minutes to each recording, then that overlaps with following programs which can cause some recordings to be blocked. I'd rather miss the beginning of a next show according to a priority on shows in the queue than lose the end of a show at its end. Blocked or dropped early, it is spoiled; it leaves a bad feeling.
I can't live without my TiVo, I like it lots, but it still has room for improvement.
I like it mostly and would never go back, but like most things, it' can get better. I got a significantly better price at Amazon and the assurance of postage-paid return if I didn't like it. That was a good deal!

Great Alternative to Cable/Satellite (Plus read all to see how to overcome a 501C error)
Music Man•May 6, 2014
First let me say, I love my TiVo Roamio. I have it hooked up with a TiVo Mini which I use in a separate room hooked up via a MoCa network. It took almost one month to get the Roamio working properly. Set up was very easy...however, I could not get the Roamio to work properly. It would show the TV guide, record programs and make suggestions, but it would not access any other apps such as Netflix or allow me to search for programs to watch. I kept getting a 501C error message. I must have called TiVo two million times and no one seemed to know how to fix the problem...a problem that they said they did not know about. I don't believe that was true because I found MANY references to the 501C error going back to at least October 2013 on help forums. My problem was escalated up to the engineers...twice. The first time they couldn't do anything. For the most part TiVo help is very good, don't know why they were so ineffective dealing with the 501C error. Now to the solution...I had read on a forum post that deleting the existing and having TiVo create a new account could solve the problem. I mentioned this to one technician and he said he didn't believe that would resolve the issue and didn't even try it. At the almost one month mark, I asked to speak directly with an engineer....they are hard to get to. When the engineer called he suggested many things I had already tried and of course they didn't work. I told him about the forum suggesting deleting my existing account and setting up a new one and this engineer listened to me. He found the same forum post and actually did what it suggested...he deleted my existing account and set a new account...and guess what???? THE TIVO ROAMIO NOW WORK LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO!!!! Sorry, to have gone into such detail on this, but it is important to understand what to do if you have the same problem - as it seems so many have had this problem. The Roamio is a great way to begin reducing your cable/satellite bills. Love the search feature that allows you to look for movies by title, actor or genre. It's apps allow you access programs from Netflix, Aamazon and many other program providers. As I previously mentioned I also have a Mini which allows me to access all the Roamio features while I watch TV in another room. I was tempted to give up...but I'm very glad I hung in there and I LOVE my Roamio & Mini. I hope that this review offering a solution to the 501C error will offer a quick solution to someone who may be experiencing the same frustration.
Pretty decent for the price

Having 4 tuners, my new Tivo is always recording something . It has good integration to music and movie rental services as well as Youtube and others. Other than that, it pretty much does what you expect Tivo's to do.
On the down side, I was getting the following error messages and unavailable functions on various menus on various parts of the screen:
"There was an unexpected problem. (C501). If you continue to receive this message, please contact Tivo Customer Support at 1-877-367-8486."
--and--
"There is a problem with your Tivo box. (C133). But don't worry, we will have it back to normal shortly. Until then you can continue to watch live TV and or view recordings"
It was very irritating. I contacted technical support and they informed me that they require a signal strength of 75-100. So if you have a less then optimal wifi connection, you may encounter these problems. Their support informed me that they would prefer a hard wired ethernet connection if possible. Not everyone has this kind of flexibility in the area where they want to put their Tivo.
Also, like the older Tivos, even with a paid subscription, you still get those advertisements on your TV for Charmin and the like. I believe that given I am paying for the service, there should be no advertising coming from the Tivo server.

Serious Upgrade from Cable Company's DVR, but
Val•March 9, 2014
There are many things to like about the Roamio, however after a few weeks of use I wish i had sprung for the Roamio Plus and the extra recording capacity. The only thing I don't like is the additional cost of adding a Mini. The $6 charge a month seems really excessive considering that all it is doing is grabbing one of the tuners in the Roamio. Otherwise it is an excellent upgrade from the Cable company's DVR.
Just after posting this review something has popped up (literally) that bugs me. Tivo is placing interactive pop-up ads in their menus. At random times you are prompted with a banner pop-up for say: "Get a coupon for $1 off Bounty Towels". Seems to me they are charging enough for the service without adding annoying banner ads. Maybe its just me, but its enough to make me drop the review from 4 stars to 3 stars.
