Modest power at best--specialized product and expensive

This is a nice, clean unit outwardly, and it is very expensive for what it is. This is primarily designed for satellite/amplification server use in home installations. Yes, it is a "power amplifier," but it is meant to work within specific design purposes which are wholly other than what power amps intended for two channel or surround use in a listening room demand. I am sure this is fine in a larger system design for ambient sound. This is a very specialized product, modestly powered at best, and the price is high for what you are getting. My mistake in purchasing was that I did not understand the purpose of the product--I sent it back because it did not fit my purposes, but in trying it out I was suprised at the lack of output compared to ordinary solid state amps found in most consumer entertainment products.

I was looking for a class D amp that was a step up from the small "T-amp" type amps that I have had from companies like SMSL and Muze. I have certainly found it in the Niles SI-250. I am using it as the power amp for my HTPC and running straight from my HRT Music Streamer II+ DAC into the amp. I wanted a no-frills, dead quite amp that ran cool enough to stay hidden in my credenza most of the time. I was also looking for better bass than the SMSL SA-36A Pro that I have. The chips used in the SMSL amps and others like them are getting better and better but sometimes they are not implemented in the amp design as well as they could be. Most have no speaker protection and their power supplies usually leave a lot to be desired as well (if they come with one). This amp from Niles solves a lot of the issues I have had with cheaper amps. It seems to be well made. It sounds great from top to bottom and has plenty of power for my 4 ohm Klipsch Quartets. The Quartets are very revealing and if an amp is grainy on the top or boomy on the bottom, they will tell me quickly. The turn on features are a plus as well.
I have let several amps go but the SI-250 is a keeper. I am not sure how you could beat it at this price if you just need a basic power amp.
