Didn't get hot enough. Couldn't make a dependable joint on two pieces of wire.

Does not get hot enough for anything but small electronics---I tried to solder two 16 guage wires and it wouldn't get them hot enough. I THEN went and bought eneloop batteries that is suggested on the package, it still didn't do the job- so I sent it back. Its unfortunate-- its a nice unit and I really wanted it to work but it wasn't meant to be. In the end, a good quality soldering iron or gun (plug in) depending on the job at hand is very hard to beat. I have not had good success with butane, or "cold heat"---but only plug in.
FYI I have 35 yrs experience and have taught Mil Spec soldering to a manufacturing company and taught basic electronics at tech schools (including soldering) so I know how to solder. this just does not get hot enough.

Okay most of the time

I got this to take with me camping when I'm tinkering with my solar setup and anything else that doesn't necessitate breaking out the big iron. It will work inside, on room temperature cable. It doesn't do anything when in near freezing temperatures on cold wiring (literally nothing). My other irons can handle this task, so this is a bit of a let down. Have used Eneloops and standard alkaline with the same result.
Thankfully, I still do a lot of soldering around the house and this is just perfect for that purpose.

Just Right.

This is a great Iron. For it running off of only 4 AA batteries its very impressive. It heats up to operating temperature fairly quickly (~45 seconds) and keeps its heat well enough for most jobs Ill use it for. I purchased this to redo the wiring harness in my project cars. It can be a real pain snaking a power cable thru a car when you have wires strewn about everywhere. This will solve my entanglement issues perfect. The only downside, which is a understandable one, is that I wish it kept its heat when soldering larger wires 14+. Other then that, its Great! Also its made in Japan, so you know your buying a real quality piece, and it certainly feels like that, Qaulty!
Just What I Needed....

I've been needing a small battery run soldering iron to fix small jobs like cable or wire breaks etc. I was looking at the Iso-Tip brand when this item got my eye. I noted that it used 4 batteries when most of the others used three or less and I also noted that it seemed to have a lot of good reviews too. I also liked the single tip approach and after checking out the specs I decided this was the way to go. Got it in and was surprised how light it was. The weight is provided by the batteries that you use. I have both standard AA and rechargeable AAs that will fit this iron. The first time I used it I have a contact problem with the batteries and had to reload them. I also had to get use to the time it took the tip to get hot. (Longer than I was used to on the old Iso-Tip I used to use.) But once up and running it works very well. I'm running it off standard AAs now till my rechargeable AAs charge up properly then I'll use them. Not a bad small iron for small jobs.
Awesome for small jobs!

This has become invaluable when I'm giving classes to youngsters on Arduino. Setup a re-purposed PC fan with a filter and LiPo battery as a fume extractor, turn this on an in a minute or two can do quick repair work. Works fine when splicing together two 18 AWG wires thus for small jobs which I would definitely highly recommend. I'm using it with 2500 NiMH batteries and charge them before use (usually keep a set of 4 in the charger); but also keep a set of alkaline handy just in case it runs out of juice. Since I use this more for quick-fixes, not sure how long it will run on the NiMH's...assume that also depend on the usage. Not enough heat capacity to do the same with 14 AWG wire so leave it behind for the heavy work. Yes, definitely recommend it! (Wish list - would like this with interchangeable tips!)
