Heavier Duty over the Catalina Maple. Why no snare Gretsch?
86•June 9, 2015
Went to "GC" to look at the Gretsch Catalina Maple set which offers an extra tom and a snare drum (over this set). Then I saw they had this Marquee set in Dark Cherry. It was used at the local drum off and it was selling for the same price as the Catalina. I kept going back and forth between the sets. I'm not actually sure I could notice a difference in sound since they are both maple, but what I did notice was quality. The drums on the Marquee felt like they weighed almost twice as much as the Catalina. I also noticed the hardware holding the toms was double braced on this set compared to the Catalina. I was worried about not having the tom mounts on the BD but I was actually able to position the toms so they were connecting, and it gave me much more freedom on tom placement since they are not attached to the BD. I wasn't able to get it to sound decent with the supplied heads so I ordered a complete batter/reso head set here on Amazon. 1 star off for not including the snare drum. What BS. Was able to find the matching snare for 250 online. Why Gretsch? Why leave out the snare, the most important part of the set?
