Was having a hard time finding self-rising cornmeal in local stores. I found this on Amazon and decided to try it. I have made cornbread and breaded fish and okra and it, works great. Good corn taste.

This mix is EASY and DELICIOUS! I put an extra Tbs of oil in a cast iron skillet and heated it up while the oven was warming. Then I added the batter (with a cut up jalapeño slice) and baked. Served with real butter it is the best ever!

As you can see from the review title, this *price* is a gigantic rip off. Convenient, I guess, if you live far, far away from any House Autry retailers. But given the state of online transactions and catalog shopping, my guess is that you can still find this cheaper from myriad convenient sources.
With that out of the way let me say: as a born-and-bred Southerner who's been making cornbread for many, many years -- this is the only cornmeal that makes a "proper" cornbread. I have tried fancy, expensive, stone-ground meals (produced locally) and a few other kinds (simply because the store I shopped at did not have House Autry) and I can tell you -- there is no comparison. This has the right texture, flavor, lightness, and density -- it's the best.
One caveat: like all corn meal, it will need to be stored in the freezer for maximum shelf life. Otherwise, you will have bitter bread. Nobody wants that.
