Best Dental Chew for Little Dogs
C.C.✓ Verified PurchaseFebruary 29, 2024
I have a 7 lb Yorkshire terrier mix. Like many little dogs, she has way too much personality and is a bit of a diva. She turns her nose up regularly at gourmet dog treats and will even decline table scraps. She has never, however, turned down a Milk-Bone Brushing Chew. We are going on 3 years with this product and she is still as excited to get her brushing bone today as she was when we first introduced them years ago.

These are well-sized for a small dog and though the average time it takes her to get through a chew has decreased dramatically, from around 20 minutes to maybe 3, I do believe that the nubs and grooves help her maintain dental health. Brushing her teeth his like trying to wrestle a tiny alligator and (don't judge me) I have given up. She gets a thorough annual dental cleaning at the vet and always gets a clean bill of health.

We have tried the Milk-Bone Brushing Chews Fresh Breath Dog Treats (1 Pack), 22 oz , Mini and, while she likes these too, there was no noticeable improvement in her breath to justify the price premium. When we first started dental chews, we used the PEDIGREE DENTASTIX Toy/Small Dog Chew Treats, Original, 84 Treats . Even though these typically offer a lower price per chew, I think that the Milk-Bone variety does a better job with teeth cleaning. The X-shape of the Pedigree treat is too large to really get into the grooves between a small dog's teeth.
Not a brushing substitute, but helps a little (& loved!)

I have a large dog (Pyrenees mix) who is a little over 2 years old. These are her carnassial teeth, eating dry food only and receiving these treats nightly for about a year, I think. These teeth are the most likely (aside from the canines) to accumulate tartar & calculus. They aren't perfect, & I definitely need to get going on brushing her teeth. I can see some beginning to stick on there, which is about average for her young age. The treats are probably helping a little, but are not a replacement for brushing! That being said, as others said these last much longer than Greenies or any other dental treat we've tried, so I'm happy to continue to offer them. It's useless for dental "cleaning" if she chews them up in a few seconds. They also make her happy- she really loves them, & though often ditzy about commands, every night she runs to her bed and lays down, eagerly waiting, the second she hears the bag crinkle or I mention her "cookie." I'd estimate we get about a couple minutes of chew time vs. 10 seconds or so with about every other brand (even large ones.)
It works!! What more can I say.

I was quite skeptical about this product; however, I'm more than pleasantly surprised at how well they clean the tartar off our dogs teeth. After spending quite a bit of money on dentals last year (not to mention our dogs didn't take to the anesthetic all that well .... ), I was looking for something that would clean their teeth AND be gentle on their digestive systems. I did a lot of research before buying, especially since some of the other well-known teeth-cleaning products have been known to cause harm to certain breeds and Milk Bone came out high on the satisfaction scale. You only give the dogs one bone a day (I give them one every other day) so it's not like you're overloading them with treats. Our little one, a Spaniel, had tartar build-up with months of having his teeth cleaned so I was willing to give this a try. Within two weeks his teeth look just about as good as after his dental treatment.
Fantastic breath savers!

I've tried every product out there for our 3 little dogs horrible breath. This has finally made a significant improvement in it. After using this for about one week we noticed our dogs breaths were not so potent. We tried everything from the gel spray applied directly to their teeth to the product you add to their water but nothing was improving their breath. Brushing their teeth is so difficult. Wrestling them to the ground takes all night (we hate doing it as much as they hate us trying to). We do what we can but wow are they tough! These bones clean their teeth and their breath. After a week of one daily bone the "death breath" has nearly resolved. We wouldn't go without these bones and are now on a delivery program. We will make certain we do not run out of these in the future. If your dogs have a breath issue, or you would like to avoid one, try giving him/her one of these once a day. I bet you will find it as helpful as we have! Our dogs line up in the morning, tails wagging, just waiting to get their morning treat (one of these bones) as we leave for work. We are no longer fearful when they wake us up by breathing directly into our faces :)
Better than regular Milk Bones - keeps dogs teeth clean too.

I can never find the larger size in the stores so I went online and walah Amazon carried it. These are so much better than regular milk-bones for my golden retriever. The dog has cleaner teeth and its easier for him to chew compared to the regular milk bones. Bonus its half the calories than regular milk-bones. These dental bones are as effective as brushing his teeth twice a week in reducing tartar buildup compared to wrestling matches in cleaning his teeth for he doesn't like it. The twisted design of the treats and numerous nubs and ridges help clean tarter from hard-to-reach places. Our dog likes to chew these on the porch 1/2 way and leaves the other half for later. We've been told some dental chews can cause vomiting and diarrhea or obstruction in the gut. Our dog hasn't had any problems in digesting them and will change review if he develops any of the symptoms.
