This is real wood. Assembly was a total of four screws. Instructions were adorable. One picture was not well drawn, but all you had to do was look at the other three shelves that were already assembled. The color expresso I would call a black cherry. Which is exactly what I was hoping for. Fold up neat and perfect. Stable when open and each shelf holds 150 lbs. If your like me and moving to the next lowest apartment bidder it's a perfect option. Also a better investment than Sauder or any other particle wood. Ikea quality might be a smidgen below this shelf, and the color and wood lines are way better in the Stony Edge. I liked in enough I wrote this review a couple of hours after I put it up.
NOT Espresso and Poorly Assembled

First and foremost, I ordered espresso but this bookcase is cherry. Cherry isn't even a color option during ordering and the box says espresso so I'm not sure how I got cherry, but it's definitely red. Second, this bookshelf is no assembly required yet all the pieces separated from each other and I had to put it all back together. It's scratched, hinges aren't screwed in all the way, and where there are nail holes there are no nails. It's terribly wobbly fully assembled. I couldn't be more disappointed with this $130 bookshelf. What a let-down. It's going back.
Rear support brackets could be better secured, and it's easy to open the package wrong.

Shelf arrived with some build quality issues, some of the side hinges were attached off-level. As I was opening the package, 3 of 4 crosspieces pulled out of their sockets and this caused all the shelves to come loose from their mountings. I suspect this was because I opens the packaging with the shelf oriented in its side rather than upright. was able to repair it myself with some wood glue but it was a bit of a hassle.
Now that it's all put back together the shelf looks nice and holds items well. Just wish it was assembled a little better and the package markings were clearer about how to properly open it so what happens to me doesn't happen.
