Excellent chainsaw!

This lightweight workhorse is amazing. My photo shows just a few of the logs from a fallen tree that I cut up with battery life to spare. The last and largest log was 9" in diameter, and this chainsaw tirelessly bored through it after about 18 minutes of nearly continuous running on the rest of the tree. I had to reach over my fence and above my head to cut it, which I wouldn't have done with our 14" gas chainsaw due to its heavier weight and the danger of its still-running motor if I ran into trouble.

I'm impressed with the battery life and really appreciate the fact that (as per the owner's manual) I can recharge it at any time. Some of my older appliances' lithium ion batteries need to be drawn all the way down before recharging.

If it weren't for other reviewers in here, I'd have been shocked at the speed with which this chainsaw does indeed guzzle oil. One full battery charge uses nearly a half quart of chain lube. But that's a small price to pay for enjoying the convenience and capability of this great non-gas engine chainsaw. I just love it!

This chain saw is light, easy to use and easy to maintain. It's good for light jobs, and it's much easier to use and maintain than a gas powered chain saw.
I guess I could say it's good for what it is, but at the same time I don't really like it.
After the recent Hurricane in South Florida, I had a lot of downed limbs and trees to clean up. The 18" gas powered chain saw that I had used to build my log house hadn't been used in years, and I found the gas lines had disintegrated. Repairing it was a pain in the butt, so when I saw this chainsaw on sale, I got it. After reading the reviews, I also bought a spare battery, and I'm so glad I did!

The saw performed well on the limbs and smaller trees, and I thought the reviewers who had complained of the short battery life were exaggerating. Then, I had to tackle the downed live oak next to my house. With a freshly charged stock battery, I got 5 cuts on a 10" diameter tree. After the fifth cut, the battery was completely exhausted. The only reason didn't immediately return the saw was that it performed much better with the after market battery.

Sorry, but I can't recommend this saw.
Awesome chainsaw, if you only plan to own one, get this one.

I had my doubts about an electric chainsaw. I have never owned a chainsaw before and usually used my sawzall to cut tree limbs and general pruning. But I had a big job ahead of me to cut down a short bottlebrush tree with an 11" trunk. I also had other 40v Black and Decker gardening tools so I wanted to make the best use of this ecosystem. The 5 star reviews were well deserved.

Compared to the Sawzall with a pruning blade, the LCS1240 cut through wood and branches like it was butter. I was able to take down the entire tree this way. I started cutting the large branches at the top, then cutting the trunk below at the end. One charge allowed me to take the whole tree down.

Just make sure that the oil delivery system is working, and a note would be for you to pick up some chain oil since it is sold separately and you must use oil when using this. You can ensure the oiler is working by dry running the chain until you can see tiny mist like specks of oil bring throw off near the top tip of the chain. It goes through oil pretty quickly, I would estimate that you use a whole reservoir worth in one battery charge setting. Check the level during long periods and refill as necessary.

The chain tensioner was really easy to use and intuitive. This was also the knob you twist to remove the cover to clean up the sawdust debris. The sawdust will have mixed with the oil so bring a rag to do cleanup.

The best thing about this chainsaw is that it is electric and battery operated. It is relatively quiet to operate, not sounding like a Harley. No gas smell, no emissions, but also no wires since it is battery operated. You can bring this camping to cut wood, the battery lasts for well over an hour, even longer than when using it with the hedge trimmer.

The chainsaw comes with a plastic cover to protect the chain when transporting it. The handle is balanced perfectly. I give this a full 5 stars for power and battery life. If you don't own a chainsaw, this is one of the best battery-operated, small chainsaws you can get.
Hope you get a good battery with your purchase

This battery powered chain saw rocks. Even the chain quality is outstanding. You will be pleased with the battery life. Get a second battery with a quick charger if you plan to use this saw exclusively.
Good for small tasks, not good for cutting large logs.

I needed to cut some log rounds that were 11" in diameter down to 11" by 1" pieces for a project, and put this saw to work on it. The battery will allow you to cut completely through an 11" diameter log twice, and will last about half way through the third cut when the battery dies (see photos). When the battery dies the chain completely stops moving; however you start feeling the loss of power about 30 seconds to a minute before it dies. I made 10 cuts on an 11" diameter log using this thing, and the battery life was pretty consistent. The battery gets hot and it'll take about 30 minutes of cool down time, before the charger will start charging the battery, after use. In the meantime it just flashes red (flashing green means it's charging).

The saw is very quiet, I used ear mufflers but this chainsaw was quiet enough that I'm pretty sure you don't need anything for sound. It does feel underpowered when compared to a gas chainsaw, and also I get the feeling that the speed is a lot slower too (but maybe some of that is the lower sound level - a good rumbling just makes things seem faster!).

Cons - this thing eats up chain oil as if it were gasoline. The container goes from full to 1/4 full in the time it takes to completely drain 1 battery (i.e., to cut an 11" branch two and a half times). Also, be sure not to store this sideways, as the oil will leak out - the oil cap is designed with a little hole in the top of the cap to allow the oil to lube the chain faster (maybe that's why it eats this up so fast). Also, if you're cutting sideways, expect to get a small oil drip out of the center of the oil cap.

This was my first B&D 40v tool, and it doesn't really work out well for me as someone without spare B&D batteries. Now, unless you have a LOT of spare 40V batteries, it'd be impractical to use this chainsaw to cut cup a fallen tree into firewood rounds. However, if you're doing simple yardwork like cutting up small branches for the green bin, and you have several batteries, this would work just fine. I can see this being a good deal if you have a number of 40V batteries from other B&D tools. I wouldn't recommend buying this if you only have 1 or 2 batteries, unless you plan on stocking more B&D 40V tools. But I'll give it 3 stars since I can see this being an OK deal for people with other B&D tools running on the 40V battery lineup.
