Good drill for the price and good range for drill speeds.

Central Machine 10 in./12-speed Drill press *BEST! (Quick-Follow-up)

In the 'expanded section' of my review on this drill press, I said I was surprised and pleased with the quality of the drill chuck supplied with it. I still am but maybe not as much as I first was. The chuck jaws would bind down on the shank of the tool unevenly, which causes tool runout. In some cases, as much as 1/64", (about .015). I have since replaced the drill chuck with an "almost as good as Jacobs" 5/8 cap, (keyed), chuck and a matting shank. I should have recommended that the buyer of this press buy a quality replacement drill chuck in the first place.

The drill chuck I bought is not a Jacobs and I would always recommend Jacobs if you can afford it or if you need to do a lot of precision work needing a drill chuck. However, the drill chuck I bought cost a fraction of the price of a 5/8 cap, Keyed Jacobs and it's so well made and accurate, that I could almost believe it is a Jacobs!

I did a review on this chuck and I must say that it is able to chuck on my smallest drill shank, (.013), and can accept my largest drill shank, (5/8"), as well! The runout is almost as close to perfect as you can expect from a drill chuck. I measured the tool shank runout to average .003 MIR, (max indicated runout), and the chuck was able to repeat that MIR every time I removed a drill and replaced it with another.

Note that I first scribed a mark on the chuck next to the "first chuck key hole" that I found best to use as the 'primary key-hole' when tightening on a tool. Some people call it 'timing the chuck' and it's done so that the chuck exerts the same pressure on the shank of the drill whenever they change out the tool with another.

By doing that, you increase the likelihood of maintaining and repeating the MIR you had assessed in your tests. I won't go into it too much but it can make a difference in precision work applications.

The point is that this drill chuck was far better than the one that came with the drill press and I very much recommend it! Buy a tapered shank for it too, (the one that came with the press may not be ground as well as it should have been).

Well that's it for my quick follow-up; I have nothing but great things to say about the drill press since I bought it and still strongly recommend it because it is definitely the best bang for the buck.

This is not professional grade, but has served well in my home shop. Shop temperature plays a role in whether the assembly needs a push to get-going, as it is belt-driven; someone who is paying attention can make this all work. For my jobs and hobbies using this drill has saved much time and improved precision. I feel it's a worthwhile item for the price as I didn't want to pay thousands of dollars or have a large footprint for something that I occasionally use, and it is setup and ready to go at any time.

Got this for my son for a Christmas gift, and he loves it! Says it works perfectly!
