Excellent Hobbyist Iron
Brian LafondMay 1, 2017
First of all, you need to remember that you get what you pay for. In this case, you're getting a quality fine-tip iron for a very low price, and considering that, I would say it was a great purchase. The iron heats up very hot. I haven't been able to measure how hot it gets, but it's likely hotter than you need it to be. If I point the tip down, the heated air rising off the iron is hot enough to burn my hand! Because I'm a novice, I decided to practice on some small hobby kits I picked up from RadioShack. The iron was able to heat up the copper pads on the PCB and actually caused them to lift off the board! Improving my technique and using a thinner solder has helped me avoid that mistake again.

As others have noted, it does smell and smoke a bit when you first use it. After the initial use though, I haven't had any complaints. It comes with a fine-tip (Style C1-1), but not the finest tip available. For that, you'll need to order the replacement tip C1-2. The tips are held in place with a screw-collar and are easy to replace.
Best for PCB work

I have been looking for a fine tip iron, I see this one frequently on how to videos, but my searches never showed this model. After using some fairly mediocre irons, I finally stumbled upon the Aven 17521. This works flawlessly for small printed circuits and general electronics. It has a specially coated tip that you should never file, it can be replaced easily. It heats up in a few minutes, is comfortable to hold, and fits perfectly in my holder. At this price, you can't go wrong. It arrived promptly in perfect condition. I love using this iron.
Garbage

Just tried using this first time today, smoke continuously pours off it soon as it heats up. Maybe I got a faulty one, I don't know. But very dissatisfied.
Decent enough

Awesome. I wish the tips would last longer but they get burnt out pretty quick. By that I mean certain points on the tips will take for ever to heat up after a little whiles use. It smokes a little and the fumes smell pretty bad. I'm pretty sure that's not a good thing. But other then, works perfectly and used it for what I needed. Seems like it's made from decent material. I say it's a go.
