Seems better than Friedrich... Less expensive, quieter, no rattlings, more functions, and heat!

So one of my three Friedrich ACs died in less than 2 years. I know Friedrich is one of the best brands, but given what happened, I decided to give another brand a chance. After some research, I realized Koldfront has decent reviews and has very similar dimension as Friedrich which makes it easy to reuse the existing sleeve. Also Koldfront is about $200 cheaper than Friedrich including tax (Amazon charges tax for Friedrich, but not for Koldfront for NY), and I have to say I am pretty impressed with Koldfront so far. First of all, it is quieter than Friedrich (both 8000 BTU). Not by a lot, but it's noticeable as both fan and compressor noises are lower. Koldfront also gives you some options that don't exist in Friedrich such as night mode, dry, heat, and filter checking. Also all three Friedrich ACs have been rattling from the loose filter door, case and grille, and I had to use scotch tapes and piece of thick papers to tighten things up in order to eliminate the rattlings. Koldfront doesn't seem to have that issue as louvers are very tight and there's no big door in front for the filter. Of course, it's been only a few days, so I can't really comment on the long term issues, but I will definitely update about this in a few months. So far, I am very happy I chose this over Friedrich.
Difficulty reading the control pad or remote control.

Difficulty reading the control pad's black writing on dark gray background. I had to memorize the led locations or get within two feet with proper lighting to read the keypad. Remote control buttons and settings are not any better with light gray keys against white background. Once you get pass or memorize the keypads, you have a great cooling AC. It has adequate insulation foam to support a snug sleeve installation. If you are installing into a Fedders through the wall sleeve the AC has a nice frame kit make your install look professional when it protrudes 4 inches from the wall. It may sometimes seem noisy but you can get used to it like the noise of a plane ride.
Good product

Used it for cooling the living room.
Unit works great and is reasonably quiet--very satisfied

Our guest house used to be heated/cooled by an ancient through-the-wall unit that sounded like a ghost rattling its chains. Well, the old unit finally packed it in and we replaced it with the Koldfront. My wife and I did the installation ourselves, something we approached with great trepidation since neither one of us is exactly carpenter material. Nevertheless, we were able to modify the existing opening, fit the sleeve (yes, don't forget this!) into the opening, secure it, slide the unit into the sleeve, and replace the existing decorative molding so everything still looked nice. Here's a plug for a different product: Great Stuff spray foam insulation by Dow. This stuff is unbelievable and will easily fill in the inevitable gaps. Highly recommended.
The unit works great. The room is probably near the top end of the 350 sq. ft. max and the Koldfront has no problem heating/cooling. It is also way quieter than the previous unit, although that's not really saying much since you had to crank the TV volume up when the old unit came on. Still, it's reasonably quiet and we are very satisfied with out purchase.

Does well for cooling and heating

I've had this unit since the spring. I expected it to do a good job cooling the room, the ability to heat was in question. They tell you right away that the heat is supplemental, not a main heat source. We built a standalone room and was using a portable A/C to cool it, no heat. We were not happy with it, so we sold that unit and bought this unit. Doing it that way cost a lot more than it would have if added it when it was being built, but was worth it. The A/C does a good job cooling as expected, but we weren't sure about the heat. Now that it's cold, we can say the heat does a good job too. The only issue I have is difficulty seeing the control panel and remote. But not a showstopper. Both heat and cooling modes will cycle off and on. We're happy with the unit performs.
