It is absolutely needed for install however the lower bearing broke within a couple holes being drilled. As a guide for an industrial tool it should be sturdier. Still gave 4 stars as you must have it, but beware of bearing issue if hoping to retain for future use.
Works fine, it's a GUIDE, doesn't have to be exact...

Yes, get it. The reviews about it being thrashed after a few uses makes me wonder what the heck they did with it. I drilled over 30 holes, and it barely shows any wear. As far as tolerance, the holes in the guide are slightly larger than the 5/8" drill bit you use. But this is not an exact science, it's a friggin guide! Works fine. I have a few holes that were 1/4" off, but it's not a problem at all (yes I started drinking after about 10 holes=)). Be sure to set the lean on your curves and corners, again, it's not an exact science, but it all worked fine for me.
Do NOT install fence without this!

DO NOT attempt to install this fence without this drill guide. Lifesaver for sure! It helps you get perfect angles to keep the fence tight and straight. Could not have installed without it. Works pretty well,.. my main critique is there is enough play for 3-4 degrees of play with the bit. So even when things appear spot on, a 4 foot fence will still have a slight lean.

A must have if you plan to install the DIY pool fence. It keeps the bit level the entire time so all your wholes end up straight and your fence isn't leaning on any which direction.
