Best pill splitter I have tried.
Rusticator•August 24, 2017
I purchased this because I split around a dozen pills a week. None of the the razor blade type splitters I tried were especially good in that they sometimes crushed pills and nearly always left one or 2 small fragments behind. This is extremely uncommon (a couple of small fragments, no crushed pills in perhaps 60 attempts) with the Equadose splitter and the halves are essentially perfect. I note that all my pills are both scored and flat. However, as a test, I split a few vitamins to see how it did. Still got almost perfect halves. I note that some (including Consumer Reports) report difficulty using this device. I am not sure what the problem is, but if you are splitting scored flat pills, set the score against one "blade", then close the splitter until it holds the pill firmly with the pill's flat surfaces parallel to the long axis of the splitter. With a bit more pressure, the pill will split into equal halves. I note that this general approach works for unscored vitamins as well. The video in the Equadose web site illustrates this process. One other note is that for larger pills the top of the pill will stick up above the twin blades. Obviously you cannot close the cover, but this seems to have no effect on the device's ability to accurately split pills, and I have had no issues with flying fragments because the cover was open. If you only need to split a couple of pills it may not be worth the $30 cost of the Equadose, but if you are splitting pills on a regular basis, I think you will find that this device is worth its cost.
Excellent quality that does exactly what it's supposed to do!

Best pill cutter I've ever used! My dad always asks for a new pill cutter although he has owned several over the years. Every time I buy him one I really try to get the most practical plus safe design. This has a great efficient cut edge that simply cuts the pill with very little effort. In order to get an even cut, make sure you press the mobile part of the cutter firmly and quickly otherwise if you cut it slowly it r with hesitation it'll just crush it instead of split it in half (in that case it would only be a user error and not a faulty design). I'm sure my dad will not be asking for another new cutter again. Plus it's compact in size and the awesome blue cover makes it easy to spot on the counter or in the medicine bag. The cover is best used and slide over the mobile part of the cutter to prevent cut pills from flying out plus it protects your fingers from the sharp inside edge when you store it and reach for it. Thumbs up!
A Disappointment

I was disappointed. The product is well made and will last a lifetime. However, it's difficult to use. Other reviews complained of this as well and they're right. The trouble is you have to hold the pill vertically with one hand while splitting it with the other. I have trouble getting the pill lined up correctly, and it tends to easily slip out of place. It takes several attempts to get it just right. Honesty, I think you're better off with an inexpensive splitter that allows you to lay the pill flat. They're much easier.
Works great!

One of my son's medications is a tiny pill that I need to split in half and then quarter. I went through several pill splitters before purchasing this one. The razor blade splitters often cut unevenly, and attempts at quartering the pill resulted in crushed pills. This pill splitter works beautifully! I do need to position the pill at the top of the devise in order to get a clean cut. I'm very happy with my purchase.
Forget the cheap razor-blade-based pill splitters; get THIS one! And USA made!

I was hesitant buying this at first due to the price, which is up to 10 times more expensive than most of the other generic pill cutters. My third pill cutter was "biting the dust," so to speak, with dulling blade and I was on the hunt for yet another replacement
But what got me to pull the trigger was that it was Made in the USA.
What I got was even more impressive. This thing can split the smallest of pills without resulting in a pile of dust and crumbs, unlike the cheap razor-blade based pill cutters in flimsy plastic housings. Those designs have an inherent flaw in which the there is too much deflection of the blade whilst cutting through pills, combined with the simple blunt-force design, causing it to deviate through the cut motion while in effect just "crushing" through a pill, leaving just an awful mess of wasted material and pills with jagged, crumbling edges.
Since these are for my small dog that has a congenital heart condition in which she needs three different medications daily, I have cut some very small pills, most of which end up being wasted using the cheap cutters.
Not so with this pill splitter. I've already gone through two bottles of tiny pills with nary a spec of dust and with clean edges.
And with it's design, there will be no "dulling" of blades; this should last a lifetime.
So don't waste your time with those cheap disposable pill cutters which over time will end up cost you more through replacement pill cutters and wasted pills. Pony up now to get the only pill splitter you will ever need...
